SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 10:1–12:13: Daniel saw a vision of an angelic man and the end of the age

In this long final vision, Daniel was told of events leading up to the end of the age.

Paragraph 11:16–19

This paragraph tells of the conquests and finally the death of the king of the North.

11:19a

After this, he will turn back toward the fortresses of his own land,

After this, he will turn back toward the fortresses of his own land: In this context the Hebrew verb that the BSB translates as turn back refers to a military retreat. The king of the North and his army would have to go back to the fortified cities in their own country. Here are some other ways to translate this:

He will retreat to strongholds in his own country (REB)

The king will return to the fortresses of his own land (GNT)

He will take refuge in his own fortresses (NLT)

11:19b

but he will stumble and fall and be no more.

but he will stumble and fall: The Hebrew phrase that the BSB translates literally as will stumble and fall is a figure of speech indicating that the king of the North would be defeated and die.11:19 After his defeat by the Romans, Antiochus III led his troops further east. He was killed while pillaging a temple of Bel in Persia in 187 B.C. Here are some other ways to translate this:

there he will meet with disaster and be overthrown (REB)

but he will be defeated (GNT)

but on the way he will be defeated (CEV)

and be no more: The Hebrew phrase that the BSB translates as and be no more is a figure of speech that here emphasizes that the king of the North would die. Here are some other ways to translate this:

and he will be seen no more (REB)

and disappear (GW)

and that will be the end of him (GNT)

uW Translation Notes:

וְיָשֵׁ֣ב פָּנָ֔יו לְמָעוּזֵּ֖י

and,he_will_turn his/its=faces/face to,the_strongholds_of

Alternate translation: “the king of the North begin to focus on the fortresses of”

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

וְלֹ֥א יִמָּצֵֽא

and=not found

This is a way of saying that he will die. Alternate translation: “and he will no longer live”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

וְלֹ֥א יִמָּצֵֽא

and=not found

This idea can be stated in active form. Alternate translation: “he will disappear” or “he will die”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

11:19 Antiochus III thereafter remained within his own fortresses, where he was assassinated in 187 BC.
