OET (OET-LV)And_he_will_stir_up strength_of_his and_heart_of_his on the_king_of the_south with_an_army large and_the_king_of the_south he_will_get_ready for_battle with_an_army large and_mighty up_to muchness and_not he_will_stand if/because people_will_plan on/upon/above_him/it plans.

OET (OET-RV)He’ll use his courage and power to raise a large army against the southern (Egyptian) king. The southern king will amass an exceedingly large, powerful army to respond in battle, but he won’t be able to make headway because plots will be devised against him.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 10:1–12:13: Daniel saw a vision of an angelic man and the end of the age

In this long final vision, Daniel was told of events leading up to the end of the age.

Paragraph 11:25–28

This paragraph describes the continued struggle of the despicable king of the North against the king of the South, the king of Egypt.

11:25a

And with a large army he will stir up his power and his courage against the king of the South,

And with a large army he will stir up his power and his courage against the king of the South: The subject of this clause is the king of the North, Antiochus IV. The Hebrew verb that the BSB translates as he will stir up means “he will arouse” or “he will awaken.” This is a figure of speech meaning that the king will encourage himself to do something. In this context the king encouraged himself to confront the king of the South. Historical records indicate that Antiochus did go to war with Egypt in 169 B.C.11:25 See Lucas page 285, Steinmann page 527, and Goldingay pages 300–301. Here are some other ways to translate this:

And he shall stir up his power and his heart against the king of the south with a great army. (ESV)

He shall stir up his power and determination against the king of the south with a great army (NRSV)

He will boldly raise a large army to attack the king of Egypt (GNT)

he will stir up his power and his courage against: The Hebrew word that the BSB translates as courage is literally “heart.” This is figurative languages referring to a person’s will and desires. Use the term that is natural in your language for someone who chooses to act vigorously and enthusiastically. Avoid translating it in such a positive way as to imply that the king was a noble and courageous figure. Here are some other possible ways to translate this:

with great vigor/energy he will confront

with sudden enthusiasm he will confront

energetically/enthusiastically he will march against

the king of the South: At this time the ruler of Egypt was Ptolemy VI Philometer (who died in 145 B.C.)

11:25b

who will mobilize a very large and powerful army

who will mobilize a very large and powerful army: This verse indicates that the king of the South will have a very large and powerful army of his own. It is implied that this army is bigger than that of the king of the North. With this army, the king of the South will fight back and defend himself against the king of the North. Here are some other ways to translate this:

and the king of the south shall wage war with a much greater and stronger army (NRSV)

who will prepare for war with a large, strong army (GW)

who will prepare to fight back with a huge and powerful army (GNT)

11:25c

but will not withstand

but will not withstand: This is an idiom referring to failure in battle. The phrase continues to refer to the king of the South. In some languages it may be necessary to make this explicit. For example:

But the southern king won’t be able to withstand him (GW)

But the king of Egypt…will not be successful. (GNT)

the king of the South will be defeated (NCV)

11:25d

the plots devised against him.

the plots devised against him: This clause tells what the king of the South would not “withstand.” It indicates that some unnamed people would plot against the king of the South and that this would cause his defeat. This a passive clause, and there are at least two ways to translate it:

Translate this in the way that is most natural in your own language.

General Comment on 11:25c-d

In some languages it may be natural to reverse the order of these two verse parts. For example:

But the people who are against him will make secret plans, and the king of the South will be defeated. (NCV)

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / personification

וְיָעֵר֩ כֹּח֨וֹ וּלְבָב֜וֹ

His power and heart (that is, courage) are spoken of as if they were people whom someone could stir up in order to make them act. Alternate translation: “He will make himself powerful and will become courageous”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

וּלְבָב֜וֹ

and,heart_of,his

Here heart represents courage.

יִתְגָּרֶה֙ לַמִּלְחָמָ֔ה

mobilize for,battle

Alternate translation: “will fight against him”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

וְלֹ֣א יַעֲמֹ֔ד

and=not succeed

Not standing represents being defeated. Alternate translation: “but the king of the South will be defeated” or “but his army will be defeated”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

11:5-45 Throughout this passage, the king of the south describes Alexander’s general Ptolemy and his descendants, who ruled Egypt; the king of the north describes Alexander’s general Seleucus and his descendants, who ruled Syria and Mesopotamia. In the period following Alexander’s death, the kings of Egypt and Syria vied for control of the strategically located land of Palestine. The holy city and the holy people lay between these two powers. These battles continued until their appointed end (11:27, 35, 40, 45; 12:1, 7). These events are described historically in 1, 2, and 3 Maccabees and by Herodotus, Livy, Polybius, Porphyry, and Josephus.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The Hebrew text, lemmas, and morphology are all thanks to the OSHB and some of the glosses are from Macula Hebrew.OET logo mark
