OET (OET-RV)Some of his forces will attack and defile the sanctuary fortress. They’ll prevent the regular burnt offerings, and they’ll set up something revolting that causes people to be appalled.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 10:1–12:13: Daniel saw a vision of an angelic man and the end of the age

In this long final vision, Daniel was told of events leading up to the end of the age.

Paragraph 11:31–32

This paragraph tells how the soldiers of the king of the North would do harm to Jerusalem and God’s holy people and temple.

11:31a

His forces will rise up and desecrate the temple fortress.

His forces will rise up and desecrate the temple fortress: This verse part indicates that the troops of the king of the North would make the temple fortress unholy or unclean. It is recorded in the book of Maccabees that Antiochus sent some of his men to tear down the city walls and build their own citadel within the city of David.11:31 See 1 Maccabees 1:31–33. In the eyes of faithful Jews, this made it unholy. Here are some other ways to translate this:

Soldiers in his command will desecrate the sanctuary and citadel (REB)

His forces will rise up and profane the fortified sanctuary (NET)

He will send troops to pollute the temple and the fortress (CEV)

The king of the North will send his army to make the Temple in Jerusalem unclean. (NCV)

11:31b

They will abolish the daily sacrifice

They will abolish the daily sacrifice: This clause indicates that the king of the North would put an end to the daily sacrifices that the Jewish priests made to God in the temple. Antiochus did forbid these sacrifices. See the note on 8:11b and 9:27b. Here are some other ways to translate this:

they will abolish the regular offering (REB)

and he will stop the daily sacrifices (CEV)

They will stop people from offering the daily sacrifice (NCV)

11:31c

and set up the abomination of desolation.

and set up the abomination of desolation: The soldiers of the northern king would place an evil object in the temple. This is also mentioned in 9:27c. See the note there. 1 Maccabees 1:54 records that in 167 B.C. “they erected a desolating sacrilege upon the altar of burnt offering.” Pagan sacrifices were offered up to pagan deities in God’s temple.

In its place they will set up the abomination that causes desolation. (NET)

Then he will set up the “Horrible Thing” that causes destruction. (CEV)

and then they will set up the destroying terror (NCV)

the abomination of desolation: Translate this phrase in the same way that you did in 9:27c. Use an expression that indicates disgust and horror. In some languages it may be natural to use adjectives and verbs rather than the nouns abomination and desolation. For example:

the abominable thing that destroys

that which disgusts and destroys

the hateful object that ruins everything

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

וּזְרֹעִ֖ים מִמֶּ֣נּוּ יַעֲמֹ֑דוּ

and,forces from=him/it rise_up

The word him refers to the king of the North. Alternate translation: “His army will appear” or “His army will come”

הַמִּקְדָּ֤שׁ הַמָּעוֹז֙

the,sanctuary the,stronghold

Alternate translation: “the sanctuary that the people use as a fortress”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

וְהֵסִ֣ירוּ הַתָּמִ֔יד

and,they_will_abolish the_perpetual,[offering]

Taking away the offering represents preventing people from offering it. Alternate translation: “They will stop the priests from presenting the regular burnt offering”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

הַשִּׁקּ֥וּץ מְשׁוֹמֵֽם

the,abomination desolation

This refers to an idol that will make the temple desolate, that is, that will cause God to leave his temple. Alternate translation: “the disgusting idol that will cause God to abandon the temple” or “the disgusting thing that will make the temple unclean”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

11:31 the sacrilegious object that causes desecration: See study note on 9:27.
