4:11 Note: KJB: Neh.4.17

OET (OET-RV)Then those against us said, “We’ll rush in among them and kill some of them before they even see us or know that we’re coming, then that will bring the work to an end.”

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism

לֹ֤א יֵדְעוּ֙ וְלֹ֣א יִרְא֔וּ עַ֛ד אֲשֶׁר־נָב֥וֹא אֶל־תּוֹכָ֖ם

(Some words not found in UHB: [who,were]_rebuilding (on),wall and,[those,who_were]_carrying in,burden carried with,the_one_of his/its=hand producing (in),work and,one_[hand] held the,weapon )

These two phrases mean similar things. The enemies use the repetition to emphasize how confident they are of launching a surprise attack. If it would be helpful in your language, you could combine these phrases. Alternate translation: [They will not be expecting an attack until we are right there,] otherwise “before they see us and know we are coming, we will rush down on them”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

וְלֹ֣א יִרְא֔וּ

(Some words not found in UHB: [who,were]_rebuilding (on),wall and,[those,who_were]_carrying in,burden carried with,the_one_of his/its=hand producing (in),work and,one_[hand] held the,weapon )

While the enemies could be referring to the Jews literally not seeing them approach, “seeing” could also be a way of describing knowledge, notice, or attention. In that case this expression would mean the same thing as “they will not know.” Alternate translation: [they will not be expecting]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

4:11 The relentless psychological attack of Israel’s enemies was having a negative effect on morale.
