OET (OET-LV)But in the days of_the voice of_the messenger, seventh when he_may_be_going to_be_trumpeting, also was_finished the mystery of_ the _god, as he_good_message_preached to_the of_himself slaves, the prophets.

OET (OET-RV)but at the time when the seventh messenger will speak and blow his trumpet, then the hidden purposes of God will come to be, just like he told his slaves the prophets long ago.”

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 10:1–11: An angel gave a little scroll to John

In this section, John saw a powerful angel come down from heaven to the earth. John described what the angel looked like. When the angel shouted, John heard seven beings speak with loud voices like thunder. God told John not to write what they said. The powerful angel announced that when the seventh angel blew his trumpet, God would finish his plan. Then God told John to eat the scroll that the angel held. He also told John that he would show him more future events.

Other examples of headings for this section are:

John saw an angel holding a small scroll

The Angel with the Little Scroll (NRSV)

10:7a

But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he is about to sound his trumpet,

But: The conjunction But indicates contrast to the long delay up to this time. It does not indicate contrast to the end of the delay (10:6e). Some ways to translate this conjunction are:

in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he is about to sound his trumpet: There are two ways to interpret the Greek word that the BSB translates as is about to:

  1. The word means soon before. For example:

In the days when the seventh angel is ready to blow his trumpet (GW) (BSB, NIV, NASB, GW, CEV, NET, REB, NCV)

  2. The word means at that time. For example:

when the seventh angel blows his trumpet (GNT) (GNT, NJB, NABRE, NLT, KJV)

It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1), because it is the usual meaning of the Greek word.Swete (page 129) has “when the Seventh Angel is about to blow.”

10:7b

the mystery of God will be fulfilled,

the mystery of God: Here the Greek word that the BSB translates as mystery refers to truth or knowledge that is not known. People cannot discover this truth or knowledge by seeking it on their own. Someone else must reveal it to them.

God’s plan is a mystery, because it comes from him and only he knows it fully. Here, the phrase the mystery of God refers to all or some part of that plan. Other ways to translate this phrase are:

God’s secret plan

the hidden purpose of God (REB)

will be fulfilled: This phrase indicates that God’s plan will be completed or finished. Other ways to translate this phrase are:

will be accomplished (NIV)

will be completed (GW)

10:7c

just as He proclaimed to His servants the prophets.”

just as He proclaimed to His servants the prophets: This clause indicates that God had earlier told his prophets about his secret plan, called “the mystery of God” in 10:7b. Other ways to translate this clause are:

as he announced to his servants the prophets, should be fulfilled. (RSV)

as he promised to his servants the prophets. (REB)

In some languages it is more natural to translate this clause as a complete sentence. For example:

It will happen just as he announced it to his servants the prophets. (NLT)

proclaimed: The Greek word that the BSB translates as proclaimed refers to telling others good news. Here the good news was the prophecies about the mystery of God. Other ways to translate this word are:

announced (NIV)

made this good news known (GW)

His servants the prophets: This phrase indicates that the prophets were God’s servants. Other ways to translate this phrase are:

the prophets who served him

his servants, namely, the prophets

servants: The Greek word that the BSB translates as servants can also be translated as “slaves.” Here the word refers to prophets serving God. They do this when they listen to God speaking to them, write what he said, and tell others the message. Another way to translate this word is:

those who serve him

See how you translated this word in 7:3.

prophets: A prophet is a person whom God uses to communicate with the people. The message (often called a “prophecy”) may include a vision, as in Ezekiel 1 and Daniel 8. A prophecy may reveal something about past events, current events, or future events. The prophet speaks God’s message to the people or writes it down for their use. See how you translated the similar word “prophetess” in 2:20.

General Comment on 10:7a–c

God told his prophets what would happen before it actually happened. In some languages it is more natural to describe God telling the prophets first in this verse. For example:

God told his secret plans to his servants the prophets, and it will all happen by the time the seventh angel sounds his trumpet. (CEV)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism

ἀλλ’ ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις τῆς φωνῆς τοῦ ἑβδόμου ἀγγέλου, ὅταν μέλλῃ σαλπίζειν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ἀλλʼ ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις τῆς φωνῆς τοῦ ἑβδόμου ἀγγέλου ὅταν μέλλῃ σαλπίζειν καί ἐτελέσθη τό μυστήριον τοῦ Θεοῦ ὡς εὐηγγέλισεν τούς ἑαυτοῦ δούλους τούς προφήτας)

These two phrases mean similar things. The angel is using repetition to emphasize the idea that the phrases express. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could combine them. Alternate translation: [but in the days when the seventh angel is going to sound a trumpet]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

τῆς φωνῆς τοῦ ἑβδόμου ἀγγέλου

˱of˲_the voice ˱of˲_the seventh angel

This possessive form does not describe what the seventh angel sounds like. Instead, it describes a sound that the seventh angel will make. Alternate translation: [when the seventh angel makes a sound]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις τῆς φωνῆς

in the days ˱of˲_the voice

The angel is using the term days idiomatically to refer to a specific time. If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [at the time of the sound]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ἐτελέσθη τὸ μυστήριον τοῦ Θεοῦ

˓was˒_finished (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ἀλλʼ ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις τῆς φωνῆς τοῦ ἑβδόμου ἀγγέλου ὅταν μέλλῃ σαλπίζειν καί ἐτελέσθη τό μυστήριον τοῦ Θεοῦ ὡς εὐηγγέλισεν τούς ἑαυτοῦ δούλους τούς προφήτας)

If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [God will accomplish his mystery]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

10:7 angel blows his trumpet: See 1 Cor 15:51-54; 1 Thes 4:16.
• God’s mysterious plan for the world is no surprise; the prophets who served God in the past warned that the day of the Lord would come (see Joel 2:1-3, 10-11; Amos 5:18-20; Zeph 1:14-18).

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
