SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 10:1–11: An angel gave a little scroll to John

In this section, John saw a powerful angel come down from heaven to the earth. John described what the angel looked like. When the angel shouted, John heard seven beings speak with loud voices like thunder. God told John not to write what they said. The powerful angel announced that when the seventh angel blew his trumpet, God would finish his plan. Then God told John to eat the scroll that the angel held. He also told John that he would show him more future events.

Other examples of headings for this section are:

The Angel with the Little Scroll (NRSV)

10:5a

Then the angel I had seen standing on the sea and on the land

on the sea: Translate this phrase as you did in 10:2.

10:5b

lifted up his right hand to heaven.

lifted up his right hand to heaven: There is a textual issue in 10:5b: (1) Some early Greek manuscripts have the phrase right hand (BSB, RSV, NIV, GNT, NJB, NASB, NLT, GW, CEV, NET, NABRE, REB, ESV, NCV). (2) Some early Greek manuscripts have the word hand (KJV only). It is recommended that you follow option (1), because the UBS Greek NT supports it. Here the phrase lifted up his right hand indicates that the person was promising something. In some languages people will not know why he lifted up his right hand even after reading 10:6. If that is true in your language, you may want to include some implied information. For example:

lifted up his right hand to heaven to promise

lifted up his right hand to heaven to make an oath

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: translate-symaction

ἦρεν τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ τὴν δεξιὰν εἰς τὸν οὐρανόν

lifted_up (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ὁ ἄγγελος ὅν εἶδον ἑστῶτα ἐπί τῆς θαλάσσης καί ἐπί τῆς γῆς ἦρεν τήν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ τήν δεξιάν εἰς τόν οὐρανόν)

The angel raised his right hand to heaven as a symbolic action to show that he was swearing an oath by God. If this would not be clear to your readers, you could explain the significance of this action. Alternate translation: [raised his right hand to heaven to show that he swearing an oath by God]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

10:5-6 While raising one’s right hand is common in taking an oath today, it is rare in biblical literature (cp. Gen 14:22; 24:9; Dan 12:7).
• When making an oath, Jews were very careful not to swear lightly by God’s name (see Exod 20:7). Jesus also rebuked insincere oath-taking (see Matt 5:33-37; 23:16-22). When God swore an oath, he did so in his own name as the highest possible point of reference (see Gen 22:16; Ps 89:35-36; Jer 22:5; Heb 6:13-18).
