BrTrGod forbid that I should do this thing: shall I drink the blood of these men with their lives? for with the peril of their lives they brought it. So he would not drink it. These things did the three mighty men.

ULTAnd he said, “Far be it from me before my God from doing this! Do I drink the blood of these men with their lives? For with their lives they brought it.” And he was not willing to drink it. These, the three mighty ones did.

USTHe said, “God would consider it wrong for me to drink this water! That would be like drinking the blood of these men and taking their lives, since they were willing to give their lives for me!” So he refused to drink it.

David speaks of the water as if it were blood because the men risked their lives to bring the water to him. He uses a question to emphasize this.
