10.1 Philisthiim, etc. RAB. Fugeruntque viri. Qui fortes videbantur in Dei contemplatione, dum incaute opera gentilium et doctrinam sequuntur, hæreticorum quoque perditionem non parum juvit sæcularis scientia. Unde quidam ait: Philosophi patriarchæ hæreticorum Ecclesiæ puritatem perversa maculavere doctrina.

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

10:1-14 The narrative of Israel as a kingdom begins with the death of Saul, who failed to fulfill God’s purposes for him as king and for Israel as a nation. Saul’s death prepares the way for David, whom the Chronicler regarded as the first true king of Israel.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

(Occurrence 0) Every man of Israel fled from before the Philistines and fell down dead on Mount Gilboa

(Some words not found in UHB: and,Philistines fought in/on/at/with,Israel and,fled (a)_man Yisrael from=face/in_front_of Fəlishəttiy and,fell slain in/on/at/with,mount Gilboˊa )

It is implied that these men were Israelite soldiers. Alternate translation: “The whole army of Israel ran away from the Philistines”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / hyperbole

(Occurrence 0) Every man of Israel … fell down dead

(Some words not found in UHB: and,Philistines fought in/on/at/with,Israel and,fled (a)_man Yisrael from=face/in_front_of Fəlishəttiy and,fell slain in/on/at/with,mount Gilboˊa )

This is probably a generalization. It seems that while all the soldiers did run away, not all of them died. Alternate translation: “Every man of Israel … most of them died”
