BrTrAnd the sons of Ruben the first-born of Israel (for he was the first-born; but because of his going up to his father's couch, his father gave his blessing to his son Joseph, even the son of Israel; and he was not reckoned as first-born;

ULTAnd the sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel; for he was the firstborn, but when he defiled the bed of his father, his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph, the son of Israel, and not recorded according to the birthright,

USTReuben was the oldest son of the person named Israel (who was first known as Jacob), and Reuben had sons of his own. Reuben’s status of firstborn entitled him to special rights that belonged to firstborn sons. But he slept with his father’s slave wife, so his father gave those rights to the sons of Joseph, a younger son of Israel. The family records do not mention Reuben first, as the firstborn sons typically are.

BSB  § These were the sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel. Though he was the firstborn, his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph son of Israel, because Reuben defiled his father’s bed. So he is not reckoned according to birthright.

And in the family records, Reuben is not mentioned first, like the firstborn sons always are.

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

5:1-24 Chapter 5 records the genealogies for Reuben (5:1-10; cp. Gen 46:9), Gad (1 Chr 5:11-17), and Manasseh (5:23-24), the tribes of Israel that settled in Transjordan (the area east of the Jordan River).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-background

(Occurrence 0) now Reuben

(Some words not found in UHB: and=the_sons Reuven firstborn Yisrael that/for/because/then/when he/it the,firstborn and,in/on/at/with,defiled,he bed his/its=father given birthright,his to,sons Yōşēf/(Joseph) son_of Yisrael and=not in,enrolled_in_the_genealogy according_to_the,birthright )

The word “now” is used here to mark the change from the lists of descendants to background information about Reuben.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

(Occurrence 0) but his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph son of Israel

(Some words not found in UHB: and=the_sons Reuven firstborn Yisrael that/for/because/then/when he/it the,firstborn and,in/on/at/with,defiled,he bed his/its=father given birthright,his to,sons Yōşēf/(Joseph) son_of Yisrael and=not in,enrolled_in_the_genealogy according_to_the,birthright )

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “but Israel gave Reuben’s birthright to the sons of Joseph, another of Israel’s sons”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / euphemism

(Occurrence 0) Reuben had defiled his father’s couch

(Some words not found in UHB: and=the_sons Reuven firstborn Yisrael that/for/because/then/when he/it the,firstborn and,in/on/at/with,defiled,he bed his/its=father given birthright,his to,sons Yōşēf/(Joseph) son_of Yisrael and=not in,enrolled_in_the_genealogy according_to_the,birthright )

This is a polite way to speak about Reuben sleeping with his father’s secondary wife. The couch is the place where a man and his wife would have slept together. (See also: figs-metonymy)

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

(Occurrence 0) So he is not recorded as being the oldest son

(Some words not found in UHB: and=the_sons Reuven firstborn Yisrael that/for/because/then/when he/it the,firstborn and,in/on/at/with,defiled,he bed his/its=father given birthright,his to,sons Yōşēf/(Joseph) son_of Yisrael and=not in,enrolled_in_the_genealogy according_to_the,birthright )

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “So the family history does not list Reuben as the oldest son”
