Section 9:1–27: Paul did not use his rights as an apostle

In this section Paul responded to a claim by some of the Corinthians that he was not an apostle. First, he defended his calling and work as an apostle. Then he used himself as an example of someone who did not use his rights.

In chapter 8 and chapter 10 Paul talked about food offered to idols. In this chapter Paul said that he was an example of somebody who had the right to do anything. He was thinking about the right to eat any kind of food. Out of love for others he refrained from doing things that he had a right to do. Instead, he tried to act in a way that would lead others to Christ.

In this paragraph Paul explained that he gave up his rights in order to serve others. In this way he could help more people hear and believe the message about Jesus Christ.

There are two ways to interpret this verse:

It is a conclusion to 9:19–22. (BSB, RSV, NCV, CEV, NLT, GW, REB, ESV, NASB)
It begins a new paragraph. (GNT)

It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1), as do the majority of English versions and the UBS Greek text. Paul said that he acted as he had just described because he wanted to help spread the good news about Jesus.

9:23a

I do all this for the sake of the gospel,

I live in this way to help people accept the gospel,
I change/adapt my life in these ways to help people everywhere believe the good news about Christ,

I do all this for the sake of the gospel: The phrase all this refers back to what Paul had just said. Paul acted as he did for the sake of the gospel, that is, in order that people would believe the good news. Some other ways to translate this are:

I do all these things in order that more people will believe the message about Christ

I behave like this so that those who believe in the good news will increase

so that I may share in its blessings.

so that I can be among those who receive the blessings it offers.
so that I, together with them, will receive the good things that are promised in that good news.

share in its blessings: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as share in its blessings is more literally “become a sharer in it.” In this context, share means to receive the same things as others. This is a purpose clause. Paul wanted to be among those who receive the good things that Christ gives us through the gospel. Other ways to translate this include:

receive the blessings of the gospel along with others who believe it

get a share of the good things that are promised in the good news

Here, a partaker is someone who participates in or shares in something with others. What Paul means is that he acts in the ways that he does with the purpose of participating in or sharing in the gospel and receiving what the gospel promises. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express partaker with a comparable word or phrase that indicates that Paul is a “participator” or “sharer” in the gospel. Alternate translation: [a sharer in it] or [a participator in it]
