Note: This view shows ‘verses’ which are not natural language units and hence sometimes only part of a sentence will be visible—click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for doing comparisons of different translations—the older translations are further down the page (so you can read up from the bottom to trace the English translation history). The OET segments on this page are still very early looks into the unfinished texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible—please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

9:14 the Lord ordered: See Matt 10:10; Luke 10:7; see also Gal 6:6; 1 Tim 5:17-18.
In this section Paul responded to a claim by some of the Corinthians that he was not an apostle. First, he defended his calling and work as an apostle. Then he used himself as an example of someone who did not use his rights.
In chapter 8 and chapter 10 Paul talked about food offered to idols. In this chapter Paul said that he was an example of somebody who had the right to do anything. He was thinking about the right to eat any kind of food. Out of love for others he refrained from doing things that he had a right to do. Instead, he tried to act in a way that would lead others to Christ.
Other possible section headings include:
Paul’s rights as an apostle
Paul's example of not using his rights
In this paragraph Paul stated that he did not use his right to receive support. He then gave two more proofs that he had the right to receive pay for his work.
In the same way, the Lord has prescribed that
In a similar way, the Lord has ordered that
The Lord said that similarly,
In the same way: The phrase In the same way introduces a comparison. Paul compared the way in which priests received their food with the way in which God’s workers should receive their food.
the Lord has prescribed: This is a reference to Jesus Christ and his instructions to his disciples. See Matthew 10:10 and Luke 10:7. It may be good to say:
the Lord Jesus has prescribed
prescribed: As can be seen from the Matthew and Luke passages, what the Lord said was not in the form of a command but in the form of a principle. Paul did not live according to these instructions, and he did not see himself as disobeying the Lord. Here is another way to translate this:
the Lord wants everyone who preaches the good news to make a living from preaching this message (CEV)
those who preach the gospel should receive their living from the gospel.
those who preach the good news should make their living from it.
those who tell the gospel to others should receive what they need to live from the people who believe the gospel.
those who preach the gospel: The word those refers to Paul, Barnabas, and other Christian workers, including the brothers of the Lord and other apostles he mentioned in 9:5b. In some languages a literal translation may imply that Paul was not one of these people. In those languages it may be necessary to say:
we(excl) who preach the gospel
receive their living from the gospel: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as receive their living is literally “live.” It refers to receiving the necessities of life: food, drink, clothes, and shelter. Preachers of the gospel were to receive these things from the gospel in the sense that those who listened to the gospel were to give the preachers enough to support their life. Other ways to translate this include:
get their living from it (GNT)
be supported by those who benefit from it (NLT)
In some languages it may be natural to translate Jesus’ words as a direct quote. However, these are not Jesus’ exact words but a summary of them. If changing this to a direct quote suggests that these are Jesus’ exact words, do not change them. If it is necessary to use a direct quote you may be able to say:
Jesus commanded, “Those who preach the gospel should receive their living from the gospel.”
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
ὁ Κύριος διέταξεν
the Lord directed
Here Paul refers to how Jesus said that a “worker deserves wages” when he sent people to proclaim the good news. See the saying in [Matthew 10:10](../mat/10/10.md) and [Luke 10:7](../luk/10/07.md). If it would be helpful in your language, you could include a footnote to explain the reference to what Jesus said.
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
ἐκ & ζῆν
of & ˓to_be˒_living
Here, to live from identifies how a person should support themselves and acquire food and other necessities. For example, to live from carpentry would mean that the person makes money to pay for food and housing by doing carpentry. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express to live from with a word or phrase in your language that refers to how a person makes a living or supports themselves. Alternate translation: [to support themselves on] or [to receive their income from]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy
τοῦ εὐαγγελίου
the gospel
Here, the gospel refers to: (1) the job or occupation of proclaiming the gospel. Alternate translation: [preaching the gospel] (2) the people who hear and believe in the gospel. Alternate translation: [those who believe the gospel]
