Note: This view shows ‘verses’ which are not natural language units and hence sometimes only part of a sentence will be visible—click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for doing comparisons of different translations—the older translations are further down the page (so you can read up from the bottom to trace the English translation history). The OET segments on this page are still very early looks into the unfinished texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible—please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

FBV Judgment belongs with you[fn] because you have been a snare set at Mizpah and a net spread out on Tabor.[fn] You dug a deep trap in Shittim,[fn] but I will punish you for all these things you have done.
5:2 The phrase is literally “for you the judgment” and so is ambiguous. It could simply mean that God's judgment is against these leaders; but it could also mean that the power of judgment belongs to them and they have not exercised this authority wisely.
5:2 Both Mizpah and Mt. Tabor had particular historical significance for Israel but are now sites of degradation.
5:2 Shittim was the last place the Israelites camped before crossing the Jordan ( Numbers 25).

5:2 I will settle with you: God’s judgment (Hebrew musar, “discipline”) would inevitably fall upon Israel’s leaders. God did not judge Israel simply to punish them, but to correct them so that his people would return to him.
In 5:1–4, the LORD condemned the people of Israel and Judah, including the priests and leaders, for their corruption, immorality, and idolatry. In 5:5–7, he warned them that he would leave them and allow them to be destroyed.
Here are some other examples of section headings:
Israel and Judah will be judged (CEV)
Punishment Coming for Israel and Judah (ESV)
In this paragraph, the LORD made an accusation against the people of Israel. He made it clear that he knew everything they did. Nothing was hidden from him. He concluded by declaring that his people no longer knew him.
Since this paragraph occurs at the beginning of a new section, it may be helpful in some languages to make explicit that the LORD is the one who was speaking. For example, the CEV begins this paragraph with:
The Lord said (CEV)
Here is another way to introduce the paragraph:
The LORD continued to speak. He said
The rebels are deep in slaughter;
These rebels have murdered many of their fellow countrymen.
You(plur) have revolted against me. You have caused many people to be killed.
The rebels are deep in slaughter: There is a textual issue here:
The Masoretic Text has “and rebels have made deep slaughter/corruption.” For example:
And the revolters have gone deep into slaughter (ESV) (BSB, ESV, GW, KJV, NAB, NASB, NET, NCV, NIV)
Some scholars think that the original Hebrew text was “they have made deep the pit of Shittim.” This is a figure of speech that is similar to the trap metaphors in 5:1c. The meaning is also similar. For example:
They have dug the ditch deep at Shittim (NJB) (CEV, GNT, NJB, NLT, NRSV, REB)
It is recommended that you follow option (1) along with most versions. It makes sense, fits the context, and does not require a different original text.Scholars agree that the Masoretic Text is difficult to understand. Two of the three words, śeṭim “rebels” and šaḥaṭah “slaughter/corruption” occur only once in the OT, and the derivation of the second word is uncertain. However, option (2) involves at least three changes to the text, for which there is no clear evidence. For more details, see the NET footnote on TW or Macintosh (pages 178–181).
The rebels: In this context, The rebels implies people who have rebelled against the LORD. It refers to the same groups of people that are referred to in 5:1a.
are deep in slaughter: There are different ways to interpret the Hebrew noun that the BSB translates as slaughter:
The Hebrew noun comes from a verb root that means “kill, slaughter.” The phrase deep in slaughter means that they are responsible for killing many people. For example:
The revolters are deeply involved in slaughter (NKJV)
The rebels have caused many people to be killed. (BSB, ESV, NET, NIV, NKJV)
The Hebrew noun comes from a verb root that means “corrupt.”According to TWOT (#2362b), “many modern commentators” suggest that šaḥaṭah “slaughtering” in the Masoretic Text should be changed to šaḥatah “destruction/corruption.” Morag, quoted in Macintosh (pages 179–180), gives another alternative. He argues that šaḥaṭah is simply a variant spelling of šaḥatah. None of the commentaries used in preparing these Notes recommended the textual change mentioned by TWOT. Of the lexicons consulted, HOL lists this word with the meaning “corruption.” BDB, TWOT, HALOT, and NIDOTTE list it with the meaning “slaughter.” The phrase “deep in corruption” means that they are responsible for many evil deeds. It does not refer specifically to officials who take bribes or other government corruption. For example:
You are deeply involved in sin. (GW)
The rebels have done many evil things (NAB, NASB, NCV)
Interpretation (1) will be used in the Display. It is supported by most of the lexicons. It also offers the most straightforward explanation of the word that is used in the Masoretic Text.
However, you may also use interpretation (2). This interpretation is easier to apply to the people of Israel as a whole. It also closely matches a very similar expression in Hosea 9:9 that uses forms of the same Hebrew words.
but I will chastise them all.
Therefore I will discipline them all.
So I am going to punish all of you(plur).
I will chastise: In this context, the word chastise means to punish someone in order to correct their bad behavior. The same word is used of a parent who disciplines a child. For example:
punish (GNT)
them all: This phrase refers to both the leaders and the people of Israel. The GNT says “all of you” instead of them all. That is because the Hebrew text in 5:1 uses the pronoun “you” to refer to the leaders and people. The GNT uses the same pronoun here, since the LORD is speaking to the same people as in 5:1. Translate this phrase in a natural way in your language.

(Occurrence 0) The rebels stand deep in slaughter
(Some words not found in UHB: and, slaughtering rebels gone_deep and,I punishment to/for=all=them )
Here “rebels” refers to all of those people who had turned away from Yahweh, and “deep in slaughter” could refer to the murder of innocent people, or to the slaughter of animals offered to pagan idols.
