5:7 The word used here of the children is that they are “foreign”—meaning that they are both illegitimate and also the offspring of “foreign” gods.
5:7 Various explanations of this sentence have been given. The observance of new Moon festivals was part of Israelite worship but had become corrupted (see for example Is. 1:13) so this could be now taken as a symbol for pagan worship. In addition the northern kingdom under Jeroboam had instituted different festivals which were not ordained of God (see 1 Kings 12:33). The main point is the corrupting influence of pagan beliefs on the genuine worship of the true God.

5:6-7 The people might think that they could win God’s favor with their sacrifices, but Hosea warned them that they would not find him; God had left them to the consequences of their sin.
In 5:1–4, the LORD condemned the people of Israel and Judah, including the priests and leaders, for their corruption, immorality, and idolatry. In 5:5–7, he warned them that he would leave them and allow them to be destroyed.
Here are some other examples of section headings:
Israel and Judah will be judged (CEV)
Punishment Coming for Israel and Judah (ESV)
In this paragraph, the LORD told the people of Israel and Judah that because they arrogantly refused to stop their sin, he would withdraw from them and allow them to be destroyed. This withdrawal and destruction is part of the discipline he spoke about in 5:2.
They have been unfaithful to the LORD;
They have been treacherous/deceitful toward Yahweh.
They have betrayed Yahweh. (NJB)
You(plur) have not been faithful to me.
They have been unfaithful to the LORD: The Hebrew word that the BSB translates as unfaithful means to deal treacherously with someone. Here it is a figure of speech (metaphor) in which the people’s unfaithfulness to the LORD is compared to unfaithfulness in a marriage. The people are unfaithful in the sense that they have broken their vow that they will worship only the LORD in order to worship Baal instead.
Here are some other ways to translate this line:
They have betrayed Yahweh (NJB)
They have dealt treacherously against the Lord (NASB)
for they have borne illegitimate children.
Their children are like bastards, for they do not belong to him.
This is true, because they have given birth to children who worship idols like they do.
For your(plur) children do the evil things that you do. I am not their father.
they have borne illegitimate children: This is a metaphor. The children are illegitimate in the sense that they do not belong to the LORD, the figurative husband of their mother. Instead, they worship Baal/idols like their mother did.McComiskey (pages 78–79) and Wood (page 90).
Here are some ways to translate this metaphor:
Keep the metaphor of illegitimate children. For example:
for they have borne illegitimate children (NRSV)
for their children are bastards (REB)
Change the metaphor to a simile. Consider making the similarity of the children to bastards explicit. For example:
Their children are like bastards. They do not belong to him.
Translate the meaning without using a figure of speech. For example:
their children do not belong to him (GNT)
If you use the third option, consider adding a footnote that gives the figure of speech. If you use one of the first two options, consider using a footnote that explains the meaning of the figure of speech. For example:
In this verse, the people of Israel are compared to a wife whose husband is the LORD. The wife has been unfaithful. She has worshiped idols rather than the LORD. The children of the Israelites are called illegitimate children, because they also worship idols like their parents do.
Now the New Moon will devour them along with their land.
So now their New Moon festivals will be the reason that they and their crops are destroyed.
So because of the sinful/wicked way that they celebrate the New Moon festivals, Yahweh will cause them and their crops/lands to be destroyed.
Therefore, very soon, the hypocritical rituals that you perform at the time of the New Moon celebrations will result in your(plur) downfall. You and your crops will experience ruin.
Now the New Moon will devour them along with their land: This sentence describes the LORD’s judgment against the people of Israel. It indicates that he will cause the people and their fields to be destroyed as a result of the sinful way that they celebrate the New Moon festivals. See the examples at the end of this note for some ways to translate this sentence.
Now: The word Now indicates that the judgment will start at that time or very soon. For example:
Soon the new moon festival… (NET)
This judgment is the result of the people’s unfaithfulness in 5:7a–b. Some versions make explicit that this is the result. For example:
So now (GNT)
the New Moon: This probably refers here, as in 2:11b, to the monthly religious celebrations that the people held on the first day of each month. There is no scholarly consensus on the meaning of ḥodeš “new moon.” Some English versions, such as the RSV, NJB, ESV, and NASB) simply translate the Hebrew literally as “a new moon shall/will devour them…” The CEV interprets the word as a time phrase, “at the New Moon Festival.” The NLT and NCV generalize the idea of “new moon festival” to “false religion/worship.” The REB follows an emended text that has “a new people” instead of “a new moon.” It has: “an invader.” McComiskey (page 79), Keil (page 89), and Wood (page 190) support the interpretation followed in the Notes. At these festivals they offered sacrifices to the LORD, as they were originally commanded in Numbers 10:10, Numbers 28:11–15, and other passages.
It is implied from the context that the people angered the LORD by the way they celebrated these festivals. They may have done so hypocritically, as external rituals, while they continued to live wicked lives (see Isaiah 1:13–14). They may also have adopted Canaanite rituals as part of the festival.According to Andersen and Freedman (page 396), the Canaanites also celebrated New Moon festivals as part of their pagan religion.
In some languages, it may be necessary to make some of this implied information explicit. For example:
the wicked/hypocritical way that they celebrate the New Moon festivals
will devour them: In Hebrew, the word devour is literally “eat.” In this context, it is used figuratively to mean “destroy.” The destruction can be caused by drought, famine, disease, or human enemies.NIDOTTE (#430). Here it probably refers to enemy armies that will destroy the people and their fields. Try not to specify exactly how the people will be destroyed. For example:
will cause them to be destroyed
will bring destruction upon them
along with their land: In Hebrew, this phrase refers to either land or fields. In this context, the meaning is similar. Both land and fields refer to places where grain is grown and where animals are raised.
Here are some other ways to translate 5:7c:
Therefore, you and your crops will soon be destroyed. This will happen because of your new moon rituals.
So now, as a result of the wrong/false way that they worship me when it is time for the new moon, I will bring destruction on them and their lands.
(Occurrence 0) They were unfaithful to Yahweh, for they have borne illegitimate children
(Some words not found in UHB: with,Yahweh dealt_faithlessly that/for/because/then/when children illegitimate borne now it,will_devour_them new_moon DOM portions_of,their )
This could mean: (1) this means the Israelites were marrying people from other nations and having children with them or (2) this means the Israelite parents were unfaithful to Yahweh and they were teaching their children to worship idols.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / personification
(Occurrence 0) Now the new moon festivals will devour them with their fields
(Some words not found in UHB: with,Yahweh dealt_faithlessly that/for/because/then/when children illegitimate borne now it,will_devour_them new_moon DOM portions_of,their )
The people of Israel were supposed to celebrate during the new moon. Here this expression seems to describe the new moon festival as a beast that will eat the people and their fields. However, it is hard to interpret this expression; many versions translate it without making much sense of it. However, the overall meaning is certainly that God will punish the people for their unfaithfulness to him.
