TSNTyndale Study Notes:

7:8-12 Israel ignored the Lord in their international politics as well as in their domestic policies. Like silly, witless doves, they had flown in a frenzy between Assyria and Egypt, the major powers of their day, vainly trying to make treaties and alliances that would save their land.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

General Information:

Yahweh is speaking.

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / personification

(Occurrence 0) The pride of Israel testifies against him

(Some words not found in UHB: and,testifies pride Yisrael in/on/at/with,face,him and=not return to/towards YHWH God,their and=not seek,him in=all this(f) )

This describes “pride” as a person who testifies against the people of Israel in court. This means their prideful attitude and behavior show that they are guilty of no longer obeying Yahweh.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) nor have they sought him

(Some words not found in UHB: and,testifies pride Yisrael in/on/at/with,face,him and=not return to/towards YHWH God,their and=not seek,him in=all this(f) )

Israel’s lack of interest in Yahweh is spoken of as if he was lost and they were not trying to find him. Alternate translation: “nor have they tried to get him to pay attention to them”

(Occurrence 0) in spite of all this

(Some words not found in UHB: and,testifies pride Yisrael in/on/at/with,face,him and=not return to/towards YHWH God,their and=not seek,him in=all this(f) )

Here “this” refers God allowing foreigners to defeat them and make them weak.
