Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for Bible-translators and others doing comparisons of different translations—the older translations are further down the page (so you can read up from the bottom to trace the English translation history). The OET segments on this page are still early looks into the drafted texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible—please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ה֛וּא יִוָּדַ֥ע לַֽיהוָ֖ה

he/it known to/for=YHWH

The expression will be known is a passive verbal form. If it would be unnatural to use that form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [Yahweh knows about it]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

לֹא־י֣וֹם וְלֹא־לָ֑יְלָה

not day and=not night

Zechariah is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You can supply these words from the context if that would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: [it will not be day and it will not be night]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / merism

לֹא־י֣וֹם וְלֹא־לָ֑יְלָה

not day and=not night

Zechariah is using the two parts of a full day, day and night, to mean the entire cycle of time. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: [unlike any ordinary period of time]

Note 4 topic: grammar-connect-logic-contrast

לֹא־י֣וֹם וְלֹא־לָ֑יְלָה וְהָיָ֥ה לְעֵֽת־עֶ֖רֶב יִֽהְיֶה־אֽוֹר

not day and=not night and=it_was to_[the],time_of evening will_belong light

Zechariah writes And it will happen here to indicate a contrast between the darkness that would normally be expected at evening and the light that will be present instead. In your translation, do not try to explain or fix this contract, instead indicate this contrast in a way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [there will be neither day nor night, but at the time of evening there will be light]
