OET (OET-RV) So the invader will be able to do whatever he wants—no one will stand against him. The northern king will stand in the beautiful land of Yisrael, ready to destroy it.
In this long final vision, Daniel was told of events leading up to the end of the age.
This paragraph tells of the conquests and finally the death of the king of the North.
The invader will do as he pleases,
¶ “And so the attacker will do whatever he wants
¶ “So the invader from the north will be strong enough to act however he likes.
The invader will do as he pleases: The Hebrew phrase that the BSB translates as The invader is literally “the one who comes against him.” This refers to the king of the North, who will attack the king of the South (Egypt). He will be able to act as he chooses. That is, he will encounter no successful defense or opposition. Here are some other ways to translate this:
The one advancing against him will do as he pleases (NET)
The king of the north will march onward unopposed (NLT)
and no one will stand against him.
and no one will oppose/resist him.
No one will be able to stop him.
and no one will stand against him: This clause further explains the previous verse part using a negative expression instead of a positive one. Here are some other ways to translate it:
no one will be able to resist him (NJB)
and no one will be able to withstand his attack (GW)
none will be able to stop him (NLT)
without opposition (GNT)
He will establish himself in the Beautiful Land,
This king will even occupy the glorious land
The king of the north will enter the beautiful land of Judah.
He will establish himself in the Beautiful Land: The Hebrew verb that the BSB translates as He will establish himself in the Beautiful Land is literally “he will stand in the Beautiful Land.” In this context it means that the king of the North and his army will invade and occupy the Beautiful Land. Here are some other ways to translate this:
and he shall stand in the glorious land (RSV)
he will take his stand in the Land of Splendour (NJB)
He will take control/power in the Beautiful Land
the Beautiful Land: The phrase the Beautiful Land refers to the land of Israel. The description of this land as Beautiful implies that it is unique in this way, the most beautiful or desirable of all lands. Here are some other ways to translate it:
the Land of Splendour (NJB)
the fairest of all lands (REB)
with destruction in his hand.
and have the power to destroy it.
He will be able to ruin it completely.
with destruction in his hand: There is a textual issue here. Scholars have suggested that the Hebrew text should be corrected. The two possibilities are:
The Hebrew MT represents the original text. It literally says, “and complete destruction shall be in his hand.” For example:
with destruction in his hand (ESV) (BSB, KJV, NASB, ESV, NIV, NJB, NET, NLT, CEV, NCV)
The Hebrew text should be corrected to say “and all of it shall be in his hand.” For example:
and all of it shall be in his power (RSV) (RSV/NRSV, GNT, REB, GW)
It is recommended that you follow option (1), the reading of the Masoretic Text.
וְיַ֨עַשׂ הַבָּ֤א אֵלָיו֙ כִּרְצוֹנ֔וֹ
and,he_will_do the_[one,who]_comes to=him/it according,to_of,his_pleasure
Alternate translation: “But the invading king will do whatever he wants against the other king”
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy
וְיַעֲמֹ֥ד
and,he_will_stand
Here standing represents ruling. Alternate translation: “The king will begin to rule”
בְּאֶֽרֶץ־הַצְּבִ֖י
in=land_of of_(the),beauty
This refers to the land of Israel. See how you translated this in [Daniel 8:9](../08/09.md).
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
וְכָלָ֥ה בְיָדֽוֹ
and,complete_destruction [will,be]_of,in_his_hand
Here destruction represents the power to destroy. Also, the power to destroy is spoken of as if it were something that someone could hold in his hand. Alternate translation: “and he will have power to destroy anything”
OET (OET-LV) And_he_will_do the_one_who_comes to_him/it according_to_of_his_pleasure and_there_will_not_be one_who_stands before_him and_he_will_stand in_land_of (the)_beauty and_complete_destruction will_be_of_in_his_hand.
OET (OET-RV) So the invader will be able to do whatever he wants—no one will stand against him. The northern king will stand in the beautiful land of Yisrael, ready to destroy it.
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
