OET (OET-LV)And_he_will_return land_of_his_own with_property great and_heart_of_his will_be_on the_covenant_of holiness and_he_will_act and_he_will_return to_his_own_of_land.

OET (OET-RV)Then the northern king will return to his own country with valuable plunder, but his heart will be set against the holy agreement. He’ll take action, and then return to his own country.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 10:1–12:13: Daniel saw a vision of an angelic man and the end of the age

In this long final vision, Daniel was told of events leading up to the end of the age.

Paragraph 11:25–28

This paragraph describes the continued struggle of the despicable king of the North against the king of the South, the king of Egypt.

11:28a

The king of the North will return to his land with great wealth,

The king of the North will return to his land with great wealth: This verse part implies that the king of the North will take great wealth from the South back to the North. His army will loot or plunder the wealth of the southern kingdom. Here are some other ways to translate this:

The northern king will return to his country with a lot of wealth (GW)

Then the king of the North will return home with spoils in plenty (REB)

The king of Syria will return home with all the loot he has captured (GNT)

11:28b

but his heart will be set against the holy covenant;

but his heart will be set against the holy covenant: The clause his heart will be set against the holy covenant means that the northern king will be the enemy of God’s covenant and the covenant people. He will want to work against God’s covenant with the Jewish people and do harm to them. Here are some other ways to translate this

His mind will be set against the holy covenant. (NET)

He will be determined to fight against the holy promise. (GW)

11:28c

so he will do damage

11:28d

and return to his own land.

11:28c-d

so he will do damage and return to his own land: The Hebrew verb that the BSB translates as he will do damage is literally just “he will do/act.” This probably refers to the fact that Antiochus did harm to the Jewish people before returning home. Historical records show that after visiting Egypt, Antiochus IV went to Jerusalem and took a lot of wealth from the treasure in the Jerusalem Temple.11:28 This was in 169 B.C. See Goldingay page 301 for more information. Here are some other ways to translate this:

And he shall work his will and return to his own land. (ESV)

doing much damage before continuing his journey (NLT)

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

11:28 Antiochus IV plundered Jerusalem and the Temple in 170 BC, killing thousands and enslaving others (1 Maccabees 1:20-42; 2 Maccabees 5:1-23). His arrogance was unbounded (1 Maccabees 1:24-25; cp. Dan 7:28; 8:9).
