Paragraph 11:25–28

This paragraph describes the continued struggle of the despicable king of the North against the king of the South, the king of Egypt.

11:28a

The king of the North will return to his land with great wealth,

Later the king of the north will return to his country with great riches.
After that, the king of the northern kingdom will start home with the loot he had taken.

The king of the North will return to his land with great wealth: This verse part implies that the king of the North will take great wealth from the South back to the North. His army will loot or plunder the wealth of the southern kingdom. Here are some other ways to translate this:

The northern king will return to his country with a lot of wealth (GW)

Then the king of the North will return home with spoils in plenty (REB)

The king of Syria will return home with all the loot he has captured (GNT)

11:28b

but his heart will be set against the holy covenant;

But he will plan to oppose the holy covenant that God had made.
He will decide/determine to destroy the holy agreement that God had made with his people.

but his heart will be set against the holy covenant: The clause his heart will be set against the holy covenant means that the northern king will be the enemy of God’s covenant and the covenant people. He will want to work against God’s covenant with the Jewish people and do harm to them. Here are some other ways to translate this

His mind will be set against the holy covenant. (NET)

so he will do damage and return to his own land: The Hebrew verb that the BSB translates as he will do damage is literally just “he will do/act.” This probably refers to the fact that Antiochus did harm to the Jewish people before returning home. Historical records show that after visiting Egypt, Antiochus IV went to Jerusalem and took a lot of wealth from the treasure in the Jerusalem Temple.11:28 This was in 169 B.C. See Goldingay page 301 for more information. Here are some other ways to translate this:

Here holy describes God’s covenant with Israel. It implies that the covenant should be honored and obeyed because it comes from God himself. Alternate translation: “God’s covenant, which all the Israelites should obey”
