OET (OET-RV) King Sihon of the Amorites who lived in Heshbon and ruled over Aroer (on the edge of the Arnon riverbed) and over half of Gilead up to the Yabbok riverbed which formed the border with the Ammonites,
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis
Sihon, the king of the Amorite
(Some words not found in UHB: Şīḩōn king the=Emori the,lived in/on/at/with,Heshbon ruled from,Aroer which/who on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in language_of wadi ʼArnōn and,middle the,valley and,half the,Gilead and=unto Yaboq/(Jabbok) the,river border sons_of ˊAmmōn )
The author is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You can supply these words from the context if that would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: “The territory of Sihon, the king of the Amorite”
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / genericnoun
the Amorite
(Some words not found in UHB: Şīḩōn king the=Emori the,lived in/on/at/with,Heshbon ruled from,Aroer which/who on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in language_of wadi ʼArnōn and,middle the,valley and,half the,Gilead and=unto Yaboq/(Jabbok) the,river border sons_of ˊAmmōn )
The author is not referring to a specific Amorite. He means Amorites in general. It may be more natural in your language to express this meaning by using a plural form. Alternate translation: “the Amorites”
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / infostructure
ruling from Aroer, which {is} on the lip of the wadi of Arnon, and the middle of the wadi and half of Gilead and unto the Jabbok wadi, the border of the sons of Ammon,
(Some words not found in UHB: Şīḩōn king the=Emori the,lived in/on/at/with,Heshbon ruled from,Aroer which/who on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in language_of wadi ʼArnōn and,middle the,valley and,half the,Gilead and=unto Yaboq/(Jabbok) the,river border sons_of ˊAmmōn )
Since the expression half of Gilead summarizes what the rest of the verse says, it may be more natural in your language to put this expression at the end of the verse. Alternate translation: “ruling from the middle of the wadi of Arnon, including Aroer on the lip of the wadi, and unto the Jabbok wadi, the border of the sons of Ammon; in all, half of Gilead”
Note 4 topic: translate-names
Aroer
(Some words not found in UHB: Şīḩōn king the=Emori the,lived in/on/at/with,Heshbon ruled from,Aroer which/who on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in language_of wadi ʼArnōn and,middle the,valley and,half the,Gilead and=unto Yaboq/(Jabbok) the,river border sons_of ˊAmmōn )
As the General Introduction to Joshua discusses, all names in border descriptions and lists, such as are found in this chapter, are the names of cities and towns unless otherwise indicated in the biblical text, in a note, or in the UST. So the word Aroer is the name of a city, as are similar words throughout this chapter.
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
lip
(Some words not found in UHB: Şīḩōn king the=Emori the,lived in/on/at/with,Heshbon ruled from,Aroer which/who on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in language_of wadi ʼArnōn and,middle the,valley and,half the,Gilead and=unto Yaboq/(Jabbok) the,river border sons_of ˊAmmōn )
The author is speaking as if this wadi were something that had a lip. If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “edge”
12:2 King Sihon (see Num 21:24-25) had controlled the northern Jordan Valley as far as the Sea of Galilee but not the northern part of Gilead (Josh 12:5).
OET (OET-LV) Şīḩōn the_king the_Emori the_lived in/on/at/with_Ḩeshbōn [who]_ruled from_ˊArōˊēr which [is]_on the_edge of_the_wadi of_ʼArnōn and_middle the_valley and_half the_Gilˊād and_unto Yaboq/(Jabbok) the_river the_border of_the_people of_ˊAmmōn.
OET (OET-RV) King Sihon of the Amorites who lived in Heshbon and ruled over Aroer (on the edge of the Arnon riverbed) and over half of Gilead up to the Yabbok riverbed which formed the border with the Ammonites,
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
