uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

הַגּוֹרָ֗ל

the,allotment

The author is using the term lot by association to mean the territory that was assigned to the tribe of Judah by casting lots. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: “the territory assigned”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

מִדְבַּר־צִ֛ן נֶ֖גְבָּה מִקְצֵ֥ה תֵימָֽן

wilderness_of Tsiyyōn/(Zin) south,to at,extreme_of south

As the General Introduction to Joshua discusses, here and throughout this chapter, the author describes the location of one place relative to another in the way that is characteristic of his culture. In your translation, express these relative locations in the way that your culture would describe them. Alternate translation: “to the wilderness of Zin in the Negev at its extreme southern end”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

15:1-63 Judah’s tribal allotment is described in greater detail than that of the other tribes. The failures of Judah’s elder brothers (Gen 34:25-31; 35:22) put him in line to receive the mantle of leadership. Thus, the tribe of Judah received a central geographical position among the tribes, guaranteeing its leadership in the nation (Gen 49:8-12; Deut 33:7).
