uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-goal

וְשָׁבַרְתִּ֖י אֶת־גְּא֣וֹן עֻזְּכֶ֑ם

and,break_down DOM pride_of power_of,your(pl)

Here, I will break the pride of your strength introduces God’s goal for the discipline described in the rest of this verse and the next verse. He will make the heavens like iron and the land like bronze to humble the people. Express this purpose clearly in your language. Alternate translation: [Then I will make you humble] or [Then I will destroy what makes you proud]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

וְשָׁבַרְתִּ֖י אֶת־גְּא֣וֹן עֻזְּכֶ֑ם

and,break_down DOM pride_of power_of,your(pl)

Here, break compares pride to something physical that can be broken, like a stick or rod. This represents how God will destroy their arrogance. Use a natural way in your language to express humbling someone. Alternate translation: [Then I will destroy your arrogance] or [Then I will take away what makes you proud]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / simile

אֶת־שְׁמֵיכֶם֙ כַּבַּרְזֶ֔ל וְאֶֽת־אַרְצְכֶ֖ם כַּנְּחֻשָֽׁה׃

DOM DOM sky_of,your(pl) like_the,iron and, earth_of,your(pl) (Some words not found in UHB: and,break_down DOM pride_of power_of,your(pl) and,make DOM sky_of,your(pl) like_the,iron and, earth_of,your(pl) like_the,bronze )

These similes compare the sky to iron and the land to bronze to show there will be no rain and the ground will be hard. Use natural comparisons in your language to express severe drought. Alternate translation: [the sky smooth as metal with no cloud blemishes and the ground as impenetrable to plant roots as metal]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

אֶת־גְּא֣וֹן עֻזְּכֶ֑ם

DOM pride_of power_of,your(pl)

This could mean either that they are very proud or that they are proud of their strength. Choose the interpretation that best fits your context. Alternate translation: [your strong pride] or [your pride in your power]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

26:3-39 These blessings and curses resemble a key element of ancient Near Eastern suzerain-vassal treaties. In such treaties, the suzerain king promised to defend the vassal king and his state, while the vassal took an oath of loyalty to his lord. Blessings and curses followed, with the curses generally being more lengthy (contrast 26:3-13 with 26:14-39; cp. Deut 27:15–28:68). Such treaties would call upon the gods as witnesses and enforcers. In God’s covenant with Israel, however, the Lord was one of the parties to the treaty (Israel being the other); since the Lord could swear by no one greater, he swore by himself (see Gen 22:16; Heb 6:13).
