Section 5:1–5: The Lamb was worthy to open the sealed scroll

In this section, John continued to describe his vision. In it he saw God holding a scroll. An angel asked who was worthy to open the scroll. The only one who was worthy was King David’s promised heir, whom John called “the Lamb” here.

These verses explain that only Jesus was worthy to break the seals and open the scroll.

5:3a

But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth

no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth: The phrase no one in heaven refers to spirit beings such as angels. The phrase no one…on earth refers to people alive on the earth. The phrase no one…under the earth refers to the spirits of dead people. No kind of being is excluded here. No one (except Jesus) had the authority to open this scroll. Other ways to translate these phrases are:

no one in heaven or on earth or in the place of the dead

no one in heaven nor anywhere on earth nor in the place where the dead are
