TSNTyndale Study Notes:

11:13 to the potter: Some scholars speculate that a guild of potters might have been minor Temple officials due to the continual need for sacred vessels (see Lev 6:28). Others, noting the similarity between potter (Hebrew yotser) and treasury (’otsar), follow the Syriac version, which reads into the treasury (see Matt 27:6, 10; cp. Jer 32:6-9). The Greek Old Testament translates this sentence as “throw it into the furnace,” suggesting that the silver was melted down and recast into a silver vessel for use in Temple rituals.
• Thirty coins (or pieces of silver) was a magnificent sum of money (nearly two years’ wages for the average laborer).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

(Occurrence 0) treasury

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said YHWH to=me throw,it to/towards the,potter magnificent the,price which/who valued from,with,them and,took, thirty the,silver and,threw DOM=him/it house_of YHWH to/towards the,potter )

This is the place in the temple of Yahweh where the priests kept the money. Many versions of the Bible translate this as “potter.” This is the person who would melt metal to make vessels out of it. Here Yahweh would mean that the payment is so small that the shepherd should have the silver melted to show how insulted he was.

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / irony

(Occurrence 0) the excellent price

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said YHWH to=me throw,it to/towards the,potter magnificent the,price which/who valued from,with,them and,took, thirty the,silver and,threw DOM=him/it house_of YHWH to/towards the,potter )

Yahweh uses irony to say that this price was very small for a shepherd doing Yahweh’s work. Alternate translation: “the ridiculously small amount of money”
