BrTrAnd I will take my beautiful staff, and cast it away, that I may break my covenant which I made with all the people.

ULTSo I took my staff “Favor” and broke it to break the covenant that I had made with all of my tribes.

USTThen I took the staff that I had named ‘Kindness,’ and I broke it. I did this because Yahweh had told me to cancel the covenant that he had made with all his tribes of Israel.

BSB  § Next I took my staff called Favor and cut it in two,[fn] revoking the covenant I had made with all the nations.

11:10 Or broke it; similarly in verse 14

OEBAnd I took my staff, Mercy, and broke it, so as to break my covenant which I had made with all the peoples.

WEBBEI took my staff Favour and cut it apart, that I might break my covenant that I had made with all the peoples.

WMBB (Same as above)

NETThen I took my staff “Pleasantness” and cut it in two to annul my covenant that I had made with all the people.

LSVAnd I take my staff Pleasantness, and cut it apart, to make void my covenant that I had made with all the peoples:

FBVThen I took my staff called Grace and broke it, breaking the agreement I had made with all the peoples.[fn]

11:10 Since there is no record of an agreement, or “covenant,” with any other nation, it is presumed that “peoples” here refers to the Israelites.

T4TThen I took the staff that I had named ‘Kindness’ and I broke it. That showed that Yahweh was annulling/canceling the agreement that he had made with all the people-groups.

LEBAnd I took my staff Kindness and broke it, to break my covenant that I had made[fn] with all the peoples.

11:10 Literally “had cut”

BBEAnd I took my rod Beautiful, cutting it in two, so that the Lord's agreement, which he had made with all the peoples, might be broken.

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

11:10 Unlike Ezekiel, who dramatized the reunification of the Hebrew kingdoms (Ezek 37:15-19), Zechariah dramatized the division by cutting the staffs in two (see also Zech 11:14). The cutting of the staffs indicated the broken covenant bond between God and his people (11:11) and the broken bond of unity between the kingdoms of Judah and Israel (11:14).
• A covenant between the Lord and all the nations is otherwise unknown. Zechariah might actually have been proclaiming the dissolution of the covenant binding Israel to God as his people (cp. Hos 1:6-9; see study note on Zech 13:9).
