SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 3:1–23: Christian workers serve the Lord by building his church together

In this section Paul told the believers in Corinth that they had not become spiritually mature. That was why they were dividing into separate groups and arguing with one another about teachers. They needed to learn about God’s plan for Christian workers and leaders. Christian workers and leaders all belong to God and are all building God’s church together.

Other possible section headings include:

Paul and all the other apostles were the Lord’s servants

All believers belong to the Lord and should remain united

Paragraph 3:18–23

Paul summarized what he had been saying in this section (3:1–3:23) by giving two warnings. First, no one should follow the wisdom of this world. Second, no one should boast about following one teacher or another. This could cause divisions in the church. God in his wisdom sent Christ to be the only leader of his people. All the teachers should agree with Christ in their teaching.

3:23a

and you belong to Christ,

and: The Greek word that the BSB translates as and introduces a further development in Paul’s talk. Paul now talks about the Corinthian Christians’ relationship with Christ.

you belong to Christ: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as you belong to Christ indicates that the Corinthian believers were the possession of Christ. They are who they are because of Christ. Their relationship to all other things comes through their relationship with Christ. They belong to Christ and should live only for Christ. Other ways to translate this include:

you are of Christ (NIV)

you are Christ’s people/possession

3:23b

and Christ belongs to God.

and: The Greek word that the BSB translates as and introduces a further development of Paul’s logic.

Christ belongs to God: The phrase Christ belongs to God indicates that Christ lived (and lives) for God and for God’s glory. Here is another way to translate this:

Christ is of God (NIV)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

ὑμεῖς & Χριστοῦ

you_all_‹are› & ˱of˲_Christ

Here Paul uses the possessive form to show the Corinthians that they belong to Christ. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea behind this form by using a phrase such as “belong to” or a verb such as “has.” Alternate translation: [you belong to Christ]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

Χριστὸς & Θεοῦ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὑμεῖς δέ Χριστοῦ Χριστός Δέ Θεοῦ)

Here Paul uses the possessive form to show the Corinthians that Christ belongs to who God is. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea behind this form by using a phrase such as “belongs to” or a verb such as “includes.” Alternate translation: [Christ belongs to God] or [Christ is part of who God is]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

3:23 Just as they may now claim everything as their own, so Christ has claimed them for himself (see Rom 14:7-9), and in Christ they are ultimately claimed by God (see 1 Cor 6:19-20; 7:23).
