Paul continued to talk about how the Corinthian believers should think about their Christian leaders, especially himself. He said that Christian leaders are servants of Christ and should be judged only by Christ. Some Corinthian believers were saying that they did not have to listen to Paul’s teaching. Paul encouraged the Corinthians to respect and obey him as their spiritual father.

Paul explained that he was a worker whom Christ had sent to teach and work for him. Christ alone was the one to decide whether or not Paul had done his work well.

I care very little, however: In Greek this verse part connects to the previous verse part with a conjunction that the BSB translates as however. In this context this conjunction introduces the next point in Paul’s argument. This point involves some contrast with what Paul has just said. English versions introduce this next point in a variety of ways. The NIV, REB, and NJB, for example, leave the conjunction untranslated. Other versions say:
But with me it is a very small thing (RSV)
Now, I am not at all concerned (GNT)
You may introduce this next point in Paul’s argument in the way that is most natural in your language.
I care very little: Paul did not mean that he did not care whether he did his work well. He knew that Christ’s helpers must do their work well. But he knew that it was only to Christ that he was responsible. Therefore, he did not care what others thought. Other ways to translate this include:
it is a minor matter (NET)
it doesn’t matter to me (CEV)
it is not important to me
if I am judged by you or by any human court.
if you or anyone else judges/examines me.
whether you or any human authority think I have done my work well or not.
if I am judged by you or by any human court: The verb I am judged is in the passive. Paul was suggesting that the Corinthians or other human authorities might examine and criticize the way he was working. There are two ways to translate this clause:
using a passive verb. For example:
if I am called to account by you or by any human court (REB)
using an active verb. For example:
if you or any human court judges me
you or any human court should cross-examine me (GW)
judged by you: The Greek word that the BSB translates as judged here refers to examining or investigating someone in a critical way. Some of the Corinthian believers were judging Paul in the sense that they were saying that he was not a good teacher. They were criticizing the way he had been working for the Lord.
by any human court: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as human court is literally “human day.” The word “day” refers to a day of judgment. Paul was probably referring not only to official courts of law but to any human evaluation or criticism. Here is another way to translate this:
by any human judgment (GNT)
In some languages it may be natural to translate 4:3a-b as two separate sentences, repeating the information from 4:3a in both sentences. For example:
But it is not important to me whether you think I have done my work well or not. It is not important to me what any human being thinks of my work.
How you judge me is of little significance to me. How any human beings judge me is of little significance to me.
In fact, I do not even judge myself.
Even I do not judge myself.
In fact, I do not even evaluate how well I done my own work.
Actually I do not even try to assess/examine my own work.
In fact: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as In fact here emphasizes what Paul is about to say. The NIV translates it as “indeed.”
I do not even judge myself: This verse part indicates that Paul himself did not try to evaluate whether he had worked well or not. He knew that what he thought was not important.

Alternate translation: [I consider it] or [from my perspective]

When Paul says that it is a very small thing for him to be examined, what he means is that their “examination” of him is unimportant to him. Whether they think he has been faithful or not does not matter to him at all. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning of this phrase with a comparable idiom or express the idea plainly. Alternate translation: [it is no big deal] or [it has no significance]

Paul uses the passive form here to focus on Paul, who is examined, rather than you or the human court, who does the “examining.” Alternate translation: [you or a human court would examine me]

Here, the words translated a human court refer to an official legal proceeding where whether Paul was faithful or not could be judged by those in charge. Here, he uses the words primarily to refer to any people who are in charge of this legal proceeding. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express a human court with a word or phrase that refers to an official meeting to decide whether someone is innocent or guilty or a word or phrase that refers to who is in charge at such a meeting. Alternate translation: [a court of law] or [a human jury]

Here, For introduces an even stronger statement about how little Paul cares about being examined by humans. He cares so little that he does not even examine himself. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this connection with a word or phrase that normally introduces a further, stronger statement. Alternate translation: [Indeed,]
4:1-5 Paul emphasizes his faithfulness and the genuineness of his motives as an apostle of Christ. But only God can judge the heart.
