OET (OET-LV)For/Because nothing to_myself I_have_become_aware, but not by this I_have_been_justified, but the one examining me the_master is.

OET (OET-RV)Yes, my conscience is clear, but that won’t mean that I’m declared ‘not guilty’, because it’s Yahweh who’ll be examining me.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 4:1–21: The Corinthians should respect Paul as a servant of Christ

Paul continued to talk about how the Corinthian believers should think about their Christian leaders, especially himself. He said that Christian leaders are servants of Christ and should be judged only by Christ. Some Corinthian believers were saying that they did not have to listen to Paul’s teaching. Paul encouraged the Corinthians to respect and obey him as their spiritual father.

Other possible section headings include:

Paul encouraged the Corinthians to respect him and Apollos

Paul and Apollos deserved respect as Christ’s servants

Paragraph 4:1–5

Paul explained that he was a worker whom Christ had sent to teach and work for him. Christ alone was the one to decide whether or not Paul had done his work well.

4:4a

My conscience is clear,

My conscience is clear: The Greek expression that the BSB translates as My conscience is clear is more literally “I am aware of nothing against myself.” Paul was saying that as far as he knew he had been a faithful steward. He was not aware of having failed his master. Other ways to translate this include:

my conscience does not reproach me (NJB)

I have nothing on my conscience (REB)

I know of no wrong I have done (NCV)

4:4b

but that does not vindicate me.

but that does not vindicate me: The Greek word that the BSB translates as vindicate in this context means to show or prove that someone has acted well. In this context, Paul thought that he had been a faithful steward, but that did not mean that he actually had been faithful. His clear conscience was not enough to prove that he had acted in a way that pleased the Lord. Other ways to translate this include:

I am not acquitted because of this (NET)

that is not enough to justify me (NJB)

4:4c

It is the Lord who judges me.

It is the Lord who judges me: The Greek word that the BSB translates as judges is from the same verb as that in 4:3b meaning “examine, investigate.” Here it is in the present tense, indicating in a general way that the Lord is always the rightful judge.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

οὐδὲν & ἐμαυτῷ σύνοιδα

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: οὐδέν Γάρ ἐμαυτῷ σύνοιδα ἀλλʼ οὐκ ἐν τούτῳ δεδικαίωμαι ὁ δέ ἀνακρίνων μέ Κύριος ἐστίν)

Paul says that he is aware of nothing against himself. By this, he means that he does not know about anything that could be used to accuse him. He is not aware of anything he has done wrong. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning of this phrase with a comparable idiom or express the idea plainly. Alternate translation: [I have a clear conscience] or [I cannot think of any wrong things I have done]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

οὐκ ἐν τούτῳ δεδικαίωμαι;

not by this ˱I˲_˓have_been˒_justified

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Paul uses the passive form here to focus on Paul, who is justified, rather than what “justifies” him. Alternate translation: [this does not justify me]

Note 3 topic: writing-pronouns

τούτῳ

this

Here, this refers back to the whole idea that Paul is aware of nothing against himself. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this by clarifying that it refers back to the whole previous statement. Alternate translation: [what I am aware of]

Note 4 topic: grammar-connect-logic-contrast

δὲ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: οὐδέν Γάρ ἐμαυτῷ σύνοιδα ἀλλʼ οὐκ ἐν τούτῳ δεδικαίωμαι ὁ δέ ἀνακρίνων μέ Κύριος ἐστίν)

Paul uses but to introduce a contrast with everyone else who might “examine” Paul (See: [4:3–4](../04/03.md)). If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this connection with a word or phrase that introduces a contrast with several previous statements. Alternate translation: [Instead,]

ὁ & ἀνακρίνων με Κύριός ἐστιν.

the_‹one› & examining (Some words not found in SR-GNT: οὐδέν Γάρ ἐμαυτῷ σύνοιδα ἀλλʼ οὐκ ἐν τούτῳ δεδικαίωμαι ὁ δέ ἀνακρίνων μέ Κύριος ἐστίν)

Alternate translation: [the Lord is the one who judges me]

OET (OET-LV)For/Because nothing to_myself I_have_become_aware, but not by this I_have_been_justified, but the one examining me the_master is.

OET (OET-RV)Yes, my conscience is clear, but that won’t mean that I’m declared ‘not guilty’, because it’s Yahweh who’ll be examining me.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
