OET (OET-LV) And_in_times the_those many_people they_will_arise on the_king_of the_south and_the_sons of_the_violent_ones_of your_people_of_your they_will_exalt_themselves to_fulfill the_vision and_they_will_stumble.
OET (OET-RV) In those times, many will try to rebel against the southern (Egyptian) king. Men of violence from among your people (Yisrael) will also rebel in order to fulfill the vision, but they’ll all fail.
In this long final vision, Daniel was told of events leading up to the end of the age.
The king of the South will meet opposition from many sides. His army will be forced to retreat.
In those times many will rise up against the king of the South.
¶ “During that time, many people will oppose/resist the king of the south.
¶ “About the same time, many people will turn/act/rebel against the king of the southern kingdom.
In those times many will rise up against the king of the South: The Hebrew word that the BSB translates as will rise up is literally “will stand up.” Here it indicates that people will begin to fight against the southern king. They will resist him or rebel against him. Here are some other ways to translate this:
During these times many will resist the king of the south (REB)
In those times many will oppose the king of the south. (NET)
Then many people will rebel against the king of Egypt (GNT)
the king of the South: The phrase the king of the South continues to refer to the ruler of Egypt, the Pharaoh. Scholars suggest that the specific Pharaoh in view here is Ptolemy V Epiphanes (who ruled around 203–181 B.C.)
Violent ones among your own people will exalt themselves
Some violent men among your own people, Daniel, will rebel against him
Some violent young men among your(sing) own people will rise up against him
Violent ones among your own people will exalt themselves: This clause indicates that some of the Jewish people would be among those who resisted the king of the South. Here are some other ways to translate this:
and the men of violence among your own people shall lift themselves up (RSV)
and the more violent of your own people will rebel (NJB)
Those who are violent among your own people will rise up (NET) |
Violent ones: The Hebrew phrase is literally “the sons of the violent ones.” The people involved in the violence would (mostly) be male. So it may be natural to translate this:
violent men (GW)
violent young men
among your own people: The phrase your own people refers to the people of Daniel, that is, the people of Israel. It may be helpful to make this clear by translating as the GNT has done:
from your nation, Daniel (GNT)
will exalt themselves: The Hebrew verb that the BSB translates as will exalt themselves is literally “will lift themselves up.”
in fulfillment of the vision,
and confirm the vision.
and fulfill the vision.
in fulfillment of the vision: The Hebrew words that the BSB translates as in fulfillment of the vision are literally “to make vision stand.” In the Hebrew there is no definite article (the) and it is uncertain as to what vision this refers. There are two ways of understanding this phrase:
these men wanted to fulfil a vision. It was a deliberate action. For example:
in the hope of realising the vision (NJB) (NJB, GNT)
these men acted in accordance with a vision, possibly one of Daniel’s own visions. Theirs was not a deliberate action. For example:
in keeping with this vision (GW) (GW, probably NIV)
Many English versions are ambiguous here, and this is recommended. For example:
in order to fulfill the vision (NRSV)
in confirmation of the vision (NET)
but they will fail.
However, they will not succeed.
But they will fail.
but they will fail: The Hebrew phrase that the BSB translates as but they will fail is literally “but they will stumble.” This is a common Hebrew metaphor for failure. Here are some other ways to translate this:
but they will falter (NET)
but they will be defeated (GNT)
In some languages it may be natural to translate this as a separate sentence. For example:
But they will fail (NCV)
However, they will not succeed.

many they_will_stand on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in king of,the_south
Here the idea of rising up represents rebelling. Alternate translation: “many people will rebel against the king of the South”

This expression stands for violent people.

וְנִכְשָֽׁלוּ
and,they_will_stumble
Here stumbling represents failing. Alternate translation: “but they will not succeed”
11:14 A general uprising of Jews and rebel Egyptians who favored Antiochus III arose. The king of the south was Ptolemy V Epiphanes (203–181 BC).
• they will not succeed: The Egyptian commander, Scopas, quelled the rebellion (200 BC).

OET (OET-RV) In those times, many will try to rebel against the southern (Egyptian) king. Men of violence from among your people (Yisrael) will also rebel in order to fulfill the vision, but they’ll all fail.
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
