OET (OET-LV) And_those_who_act_wickedly_of the_covenant he_will_pollute with_flattering_words/messages and_a_people_of which_know_of his/its_god they_will_display_strength and_they_will_act.
OET (OET-RV) Using flattery, he will corrupt others who oppose the agreement, But the people who know their god will be strong and will take action.
In this long final vision, Daniel was told of events leading up to the end of the age.
This paragraph tells how the soldiers of the king of the North would do harm to Jerusalem and God’s holy people and temple.
With flattery he will corrupt those who violate the covenant,
The king of the north will use flattery to win over some people, people who were unfaithful to the covenant.
The king of the north will deceive with flattering words those who had abandoned/rejected God’s covenant.
With flattery he will corrupt those who violate the covenant: This verse part describes how the king of the North will win some of the Jews to his side.11:32 The Jewish high priest Menelaus and his followers agreed to accept the actions of Antiochus. Other ways to translate this include:
The king will use deceit to win followers from those who are unfaithful to God (CEV)
The king of the North will tell lies and cause those who have not obeyed God to be ruined. (NCV)
With flattery: The Hebrew phrase that the BSB translates as With flattery is more literally “with slipperiness” or “with smoothness.” A similar phrase is used in 11:21d, where the BSB translates it as “through intrigue.” The idea is that the evil king of the north will use smooth and deceptive talk to win people to his side.
he will corrupt those who violate the covenant: The Hebrew verb that the BSB translates as corrupt means to defile or make someone unclean/impure. In this context the thought is that of causing people to become evil, or winning them over to the evil side. Here is another way to translate this:
he will seduce…those who violate the covenant (RSV)
those who violate the covenant: The Hebrew phrase that the BSB translates as those who violate the covenant refers to Jewish people who were not faithful to the covenant that God had made with them. Here is another way to translate this:
those who have rejected the covenant (NET)
but the people who know their God will firmly resist him.
But those who know their God will remain strong and take action.
However, all God’s people who are committed to him will remain firm and will resist/oppose the king of the north.
but the people who know their God will firmly resist him: This verse part is in contrast to 11:32a. Not all the Jews will allow themselves to be corrupted by the king of the north. Those who know God will resist that evil king.
will firmly resist him: The Hebrew phrase that the BSB translates as will firmly resist him is more literally “will be strong and will act.” The text does not say exactly what these people will do, and it is recommended that you do not make it explicit.11:32 Daniel does not seem to approve of the armed aggressive warfare of the Maccabees. See 11:14. Here are some other ways to translate this:
will do everything possible to oppose him (CEV)
will be strong and take action (GW)
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / infostructure
וּמַרְשִׁיעֵ֣י בְרִ֔ית יַחֲנִ֖יף בַּחֲלַקּ֑וֹת
and,[those_who]_act_wickedly_of covenant seduce with,flattering_[words]
If it would be more natural in your language, you may want to put the information about the wicked actors of the covenant before the information about flatteries. Alternate translation: [And the people who disobey the covenant, he will pollute with flatteries]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
יַחֲנִ֖יף בַּחֲלַקּ֑וֹת
seduce with,flattering_[words]
Here the angel is speaking as if this king would pollute these people, meaning that he will lead them into wickedness. Your language may have a comparable expression that you can use in your translation, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [And he will use flattery to corrupt]
Note 3 topic: grammar-collectivenouns
וְעַ֛ם יֹדְעֵ֥י אֱלֹהָ֖יו
and,a_people_of knowing his/its=god
In this verse, the word people is singular in form, but it refers to all of the Israelites as a group. That is why the angel uses the singular pronoun its. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use plural forms here. Alternate translation: [But the people who know their God]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
וְעַ֛ם יֹדְעֵ֥י אֱלֹהָ֖יו
and,a_people_of knowing his/its=god
The angel is using knowing its God as a common expression of the culture to mean “remaining faithful to its God.” If this phrase does not have that meaning for your readers, you could use a comparable expression from your language that does have that meaning, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [But the people remaining faithful to its God]
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / possession
אֱלֹהָ֖יו
his/its=god
The angel is not using this possessive form its God to indicate that these people possess or control God. Rather, the angel is using these words to indicate that God is the one whom these people worship. Alternate translation: [the God they worship]
Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / hendiadys
יַחֲזִ֥קוּ וְעָשֽׂוּ
stand_firm and,they_will_act
The phrase be strong and act expresses a single idea. The word be strong tells more about act. If it would be more natural in your language, you could express this meaning in a different way. Alternate translation: [they will act strongly]
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
