OET (OET-LV)And_reports they_will_dismay_him from_the_east and_from_the_north and_he_will_go_out in_rage great to_destroy and_to_totally_destroy many_people.

OET (OET-RV)But reports coming in from the east and the north will terrify him, and he’ll go out to fight furiously and kill many.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 10:1–12:13: Daniel saw a vision of an angelic man and the end of the age

In this long final vision, Daniel was told of events leading up to the end of the age.

Paragraph 11:40–45

This paragraph describes the final battles and end of the despicable king of the north.

11:44a

But news from the east and the north will alarm him,

But news from the east and the north will alarm him: The Hebrew word that the BSB translates as news can mean “reports” or “rumors.” It refers to things that one hears from others. The king would hear some things from the east and the north that would greatly disturb him. Here are some other ways to translate this:

But reports will trouble him from the east and north (NET)

Then news that comes from the east and the north will frighten him (GNT)

In some languages it may be natural to make the king the subject of this clause. For example:

But he will be alarmed by news from the east and the north (CEV)

In other languages it may be natural to make the men who made the reports the subject. For example:

But his men in the east and the north will send him news/reports and alarm him.

11:44b

and he will go out with great fury to destroy many and devote them to destruction.

and he will go out with great fury to destroy many and devote them to destruction: This clause tells what the king will do when he is alarmed by the reports from the east and the north. He will be very angry and will go with his army to destroy and kill many people. Here are some other ways to translate this:

and he shall go out with great fury to bring ruin and complete destruction to many (NRSV)

He will leave very angry to destroy and exterminate many. (GW)

to destroy many and devote them to destruction: In this context the verbs that the BSB translates as destroy and devote them to destruction are synonyms. Together they refer to total ruin. In some languages it may be natural to combine them into one verb phrase as the CEV has done:

and cause great destruction (CEV)

uW Translation Notes:

and,he_will_go_out

To go out represents the action of attacking the enemy.

וּֽלְהַחֲרִ֖ים רַבִּֽים

Alternate translation: “to destroy many people”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

11:5-45 Throughout this passage, the king of the south describes Alexander’s general Ptolemy and his descendants, who ruled Egypt; the king of the north describes Alexander’s general Seleucus and his descendants, who ruled Syria and Mesopotamia. In the period following Alexander’s death, the kings of Egypt and Syria vied for control of the strategically located land of Palestine. The holy city and the holy people lay between these two powers. These battles continued until their appointed end (11:27, 35, 40, 45; 12:1, 7). These events are described historically in 1, 2, and 3 Maccabees and by Herodotus, Livy, Polybius, Porphyry, and Josephus.
