OET (OET-RV) We Israelis have sinned and done wrong. We have done wicked things and rebelled against you, not wanting to obey your rules and instructions.
The vision recorded in this chapter occurred during the first year of the reign of Darius (538 B.C.). Thirteen years had therefore passed since Daniel received the vision described in chapter 8. Daniel was now more than eighty years old.
Daniel had read in the book of Jeremiah that God’s people would remain in exile and serve the king of Babylon for seventy years (Jeremiah 25:11). During that time the city of Jerusalem would remain in ruins. However, God had promised to bring his people back to the land of Judah after the seventy years were over (Jeremiah 29:10). Now Daniel realized that the seventy-year period was almost at an end. He prayed for his people and for Jerusalem. In response, God sent the angel Gabriel to reveal what would happen in the future.
Daniel confessed to God the sin of his people, the people of Israel.
we have sinned and done wrong.
We(excl) have sinned. We have done wrong things.
But we have done wrong things. Yes, we have done evil.
we have sinned and done wrong: Daniel included himself among the people of God who had sinned. He emphasized the greatness of their sin by using two different verbs. In some languages it may be natural to emphasize this in a different way. For example:
But we have sinned terribly (CEV)
We have acted wickedly and rebelled.
We(excl) have acted wickedly and have rebelled against you.
Our actions have been wicked/evil and we have refused to obey you.
We have acted wickedly and rebelled: Daniel again used two different verbs to speak about one way or pattern of behaving. He said that the people of Israel had acted wickedly and had rebelled against God, that is, they had rebelled by acting wickedly. Other ways to translate this include:
but we have sinned by refusing to obey you
We have been wicked and have turned against you (NCV)
We have turned away from Your commandments and ordinances.
We(excl) have ignored your commands and your laws.
We have not followed your commands.
We have turned away from Your commandments and ordinances: The Hebrew word that the BSB translates literally as We have turned away means to decide to ignore something. Consider if this physical act has a similar meaning in your culture. There are at least two ways to translate this:
translate the action literally. For example:
we have turned our backs on your commands and laws
translate the meaning of the action. For example:
we have rejected your commandments and your decrees (REB)
and scorned your commands and regulations (NLT)
we have stopped following your commands and laws
commandments and ordinances: The two nouns that the BSB translates as commandments and ordinances both refer to the orders or instructions that God gave to his people. In some languages it may be natural to combine them into one expression. For example:
the things that you commanded us to do

These two phrases express one idea in two different ways for emphasis.

These two phrases express one idea in two different ways for emphasis.

The words commandments and ordinances share similar meanings and refer to the whole law.
9:5 Daniel used four different words meaning sin: The people had sinned (literally missed the mark), done wrong (i.e., committed a bent or twisted act), rebelled against the covenant, and scorned (literally turned away from) the Lord’s instructions.
OET (OET-LV) We_have_sinned and_we_have_committed_iniquity and[fn] and_we_have_rebelled and_we_have_turned_aside from_commands_of_your and_from_judgements_of_your.

OET (OET-RV) We Israelis have sinned and done wrong. We have done wicked things and rebelled against you, not wanting to obey your rules and instructions.
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
