SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 9:1–27: Daniel asked God to help Jerusalem and received a message from Gabriel concerning seventy weeks

The vision recorded in this chapter occurred during the first year of the reign of Darius (538 B.C.). Thirteen years had therefore passed since Daniel received the vision described in chapter 8. Daniel was now more than eighty years old.

Daniel had read in the book of Jeremiah that God’s people would remain in exile and serve the king of Babylon for seventy years (Jeremiah 25:11). During that time the city of Jerusalem would remain in ruins. However, God had promised to bring his people back to the land of Judah after the seventy years were over (Jeremiah 29:10). Now Daniel realized that the seventy-year period was almost at an end. He prayed for his people and for Jerusalem. In response, God sent the angel Gabriel to reveal what would happen in the future.

Paragraph 9:17–19

Daniel begged God to help Jerusalem. He recognized that the people of Israel did not deserve God’s help, but he asked for forgiveness on the ground of God’s own nature and mercy.

9:19a

O Lord, listen! O Lord, forgive! O Lord, hear and act!

O Lord, listen! O Lord, forgive! O Lord, hear and act!: In this series of commands, Daniel asked God to help the people of Israel. In some languages it may be natural to use the form of address (Lord) once rather than three times. For example:

Lord, please listen. Please forgive us. Please hear my request and help us.

O Lord, listen!: In some languages it may be natural to supply an object:

Lord, listen to us

Lord, please listen to this/our prayer

O Lord, forgive!: In some languages it may be natural to supply an object and indicate who or what the Lord should forgive. For example:

Lord, forgive us(excl)!

Lord, please forgive our sins

O Lord, hear and act!: Again, in some languages it may be helpful to say specifically what Daniel wanted the Lord to hear and how he wanted the Lord to act. For example:

Lord, hear our prayer and help us

9:19b

For Your sake, O my God, do not delay,

For Your sake, O my God: The Hebrew phrase that the BSB translates as For Your sake means “for the sake of your own glory.”

do not delay: The Hebrew phrase that the BSB translates literally as do not delay means “do not wait” or “act immediately.” In some languages it may be natural to say what Daniel was asking God to do immediately, that is, without delay:

do not wait to act/help!

help us (excl) at once!

In some languages it may be natural to reverse the phrases in 9:19d. For example:

Don’t delay, for your own sake, O my God! (NET)

9:19c

because Your city and Your people bear Your name.”

because Your city and Your people bear Your name: This is a reason clause. The city of Jerusalem and the people of Israel belonged to God, and so, Daniel argued that God should help them right away. See the note on “that bears your name” in 9:18b, and how you translated the phrase there. Other ways to translate this include:

For your city and your people are called by your name (NET)

for the city of Jerusalem is yours, and its people belong to you

This city and these people are yours. (GNT)

General Comment on 9:19b-c

In some languages it may be natural to reverse the order of 9:19b and c, and to state first the ground of Daniel’s request. For example:

Your city and your people bear your Name. So for your own sake, my God, do not wait to help them!

uW Translation Notes:

אַל־תְּאַחַ֑ר

not delay

This can be stated in positive form. Alternate translation: “act quickly”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

9:19 listen and act! . . . do not delay: Daniel prayed this prayer in 539 BC (see study note on 9:1). Shortly thereafter (in 538 BC), King Cyrus gave his decree allowing the Jewish people to return to Judea (Ezra 1:1-4). The new Temple in Jerusalem was completed in 515 BC (Ezra 6:15). God returned the Israelites from exile in response to their prayers and repentance, just as the Exile had been his response to his people’s sins and rebellion.
• your people and your city bear your name: God’s reputation was associated with Jerusalem (Neh 1:9) and his people, Israel (Exod 5:22–6:1).
