OET (OET-LV)At_the_beginning_of your(pl)_supplications_of_your a_message it_went_forth and_I I_have_come to_announce if/because are_precious you and_understand (in)_message and_understand (in)_vision.

OET (OET-RV)An order was given right at the beginning of your prayer and fasting, and I’ve come personally to tell you, because you’re highly respected, so then consider the message and understand the vision:

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 9:1–27: Daniel asked God to help Jerusalem and received a message from Gabriel concerning seventy weeks

The vision recorded in this chapter occurred during the first year of the reign of Darius (538 B.C.). Thirteen years had therefore passed since Daniel received the vision described in chapter 8. Daniel was now more than eighty years old.

Daniel had read in the book of Jeremiah that God’s people would remain in exile and serve the king of Babylon for seventy years (Jeremiah 25:11). During that time the city of Jerusalem would remain in ruins. However, God had promised to bring his people back to the land of Judah after the seventy years were over (Jeremiah 29:10). Now Daniel realized that the seventy-year period was almost at an end. He prayed for his people and for Jerusalem. In response, God sent the angel Gabriel to reveal what would happen in the future.

9:23a

At the beginning of your petitions, an answer went out,

At the beginning of your petitions: The Hebrew phrase that the BSB literally translates as At the beginning of your petitions refers to the time when Daniel began to pray and ask God for help (9:3a–b). Other ways to translate this include:

At the beginning of your pleas for mercy (ESV)

As soon as you began to make your request (GW)

At the time you started praying to God for help

an answer went out: The Hebrew word that the BSB translates as an answer here means “message.” In this case the message was a reply to Daniel’s prayer, so the GW says:

a reply was sent (GW)

In some languages it may be necessary to make it explicit that the answer, message, or reply came from God. For example:

God sent you (sing) a message/reply

9:23b

and I have come to tell you,

and I have come to tell you: The angel Gabriel indicated that he had come to bring Daniel the word or message from God. The original Hebrew text probably did not include the pronoun you. But in many languages it may be natural to supply it, as the BSB and many other English versions do.

In some languages it may be natural to begin a new sentence here. For example:

I have come to give you the reply (GW)

9:23c

for you are highly precious.

for you are highly precious: The Hebrew word that the BSB translates as highly precious means “a precious thing/treasure,” that is, “valuable.” This clause gives the reason why God immediately sent Gabriel to bring his message to Daniel. Other ways to translate this include:

because you are highly respected (GW)

for you are valued very much

In some languages it may be necessary to make it clear that the one who respected Daniel was God himself. For example:

God thinks highly of you (CEV)

for you are of great value in God’s sight (NET)

for you are God’s precious treasure

9:23d

So consider the message and understand the vision:

So consider the message and understand the vision: There are two ways to understand the Hebrew clauses that the BSB translates as consider the message and understand the vision:

  1. They refer to two things. The phrase the message refers to the message from Gabriel and the vision refers to the revelation given by Jeremiah in Jeremiah 25. This is probably the interpretation followed by the following English versions:

So study the message, and understand the vision (GW)

Now pay attention while I explain the vision (GNT)

Listen carefully so that you can understand the meaning of your vision (NLT) (NCV, GW, NIV, NRSV, NLT)

  2. They refer to one thing. Gabriel meant “think carefully about the revelatory vision.” See the NET note: “This sentence is perhaps a compound hendiadys.” For example, the NJB says.

Grasp the meaning of the word, understand the vision (NJB)

    (perhaps REB, NJB, REB)

It is difficult to be sure which interpretation some of the English versions are following. However, it is recommended that you follow interpretation (1). Gabriel encouraged Daniel to listen to his message carefully so he would be able to understand the vision, that is, Jeremiah’s vision. The GNT and NLT (above) have left the object of the first verb implied (the word, message) and this may be natural in some other languages also.

uW Translation Notes:

יָצָ֣א דָבָ֗ר

he/it_went_forth message

Alternate translation: “God gave the order”

וּבִין֙ בַּדָּבָ֔ר

and,understand (in),word

Alternate translation: “Therefore think about this message”

בַּמַּרְאֶֽה

(in),vision

This refers back to the prophesy of Jeremiah in [Daniel 9:2](../09/02.md).
