OET (OET-RV)“Now, my master, our god, who used his amazing power to bring his people out of Egypt, and have made a reputation for yourself which stands until today, we have sinned against you and been wicked.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 9:1–27: Daniel asked God to help Jerusalem and received a message from Gabriel concerning seventy weeks

The vision recorded in this chapter occurred during the first year of the reign of Darius (538 B.C.). Thirteen years had therefore passed since Daniel received the vision described in chapter 8. Daniel was now more than eighty years old.

Daniel had read in the book of Jeremiah that God’s people would remain in exile and serve the king of Babylon for seventy years (Jeremiah 25:11). During that time the city of Jerusalem would remain in ruins. However, God had promised to bring his people back to the land of Judah after the seventy years were over (Jeremiah 29:10). Now Daniel realized that the seventy-year period was almost at an end. He prayed for his people and for Jerusalem. In response, God sent the angel Gabriel to reveal what would happen in the future.

Paragraph 9:15–16

In this paragraph Daniel began his appeal to God for mercy.

9:15a

Now, O Lord our God, who brought Your people out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand,

Now, O Lord our God, who brought Your people out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand: Daniel began his appeal by mentioning a time in the past when God had saved his people.

In some languages it may be most clear and natural to translate this as a separate sentence. For example:

Now, Lord our God, by your power you saved your people from Egypt.

Now: The Hebrew word that the BSB translates as Now here begins Daniel’s appeal. It introduces a transition of thought rather than functioning as a time word. The GNT has not translated it explicitly. You should introduce this new paragraph and appeal in a way that is natural in your language.

O Lord our God: Daniel addressed God directly as Master and God of the people of Israel. In your translation, Daniel should address God in this way using the form that is most clear and natural. For example:

our Master and God

our God who rules over us

with a mighty hand: This is an idiom referring to God’s use of power. See Exodus 3:3, 9, and 14. Other ways to translate this include:

with great power (NET)

by your great power

in power

9:15b

and who made for Yourself a name renowned to this day,

and who made for Yourself a name renowned to this day: This refers to the result of the event mentioned in 9:15a. By bringing his people out of Egypt, God won fame and glory for his name, that is, for himself. Many peoples and nations heard what he had done and how he had saved the people of Israel. Other ways to translate this include:

and made yourself famous even today (GW)

people praise you for that even today

renowned to this day: The Hebrew phrase that the BSB translates as to this day refers to the time of Daniel. God had brought Israel out of Egypt a thousand years before, and yet people still praised him for it. Other ways to translate this include:

that lives on to this day (REB)

that is remembered to this day (NET)

and your power is still remembered (GNT)

9:15c

we have sinned; we have acted wickedly.

we have sinned; we have acted wickedly: These two clauses repeat the same thought for the sake of emphasis. In some languages it may be natural to indicate the emphasis in a different way. For example:

we have certainly done wrong

we have sinned terribly (CEV)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

בְּיָ֣ד חֲזָקָ֔ה

by,a_hand mighty

Here mighty hand is a metonym for strength. Alternate translation: “with great strength”

וַתַּֽעַשׂ־לְךָ֥ שֵׁ֖ם כַּיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֑ה

and,you_made to/for=yourself(m) name_of as,day the=this

Alternate translation: “and you caused people to know how great you are, as you still do today”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism

חָטָ֖אנוּ רָשָֽׁעְנוּ

sinned acted_wickedly

These two clauses mean basically the same thing and are used together to emphasize how bad sin is.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / exclusive

חָטָ֖אנוּ רָשָֽׁעְנוּ

sinned acted_wickedly

Daniel and Israel sinned and did wicked things, but we does not include God.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

9:15 God could bring lasting honor to his name by rescuing his people from exile in Babylonia, just as he did when he rescued them from Egypt (cp. Ezek 36:19-24).
