OET (OET-LV)In_year one of_reigning_his I Dāniyyʼēl I_observed in_scrolls the_number_of the_years which it_came the_message_of YHWH to Yirməyāh/(Jeremiah) the_prophet to_complete to_the_ruins_of Yərūshālam/(Jerusalem) seventy year[s].

OET (OET-RV)and during that first year of his reign that I, Daniel, understood from the sacred books that Yahweh had told the prophet Yirmeyah (Jeremiah) that Yerushalem city would be destroyed and remain in ruins for seventy years.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 9:1–27: Daniel asked God to help Jerusalem and received a message from Gabriel concerning seventy weeks

The vision recorded in this chapter occurred during the first year of the reign of Darius (538 B.C.). Thirteen years had therefore passed since Daniel received the vision described in chapter 8. Daniel was now more than eighty years old.

Daniel had read in the book of Jeremiah that God’s people would remain in exile and serve the king of Babylon for seventy years (Jeremiah 25:11). During that time the city of Jerusalem would remain in ruins. However, God had promised to bring his people back to the land of Judah after the seventy years were over (Jeremiah 29:10). Now Daniel realized that the seventy-year period was almost at an end. He prayed for his people and for Jerusalem. In response, God sent the angel Gabriel to reveal what would happen in the future.

Paragraph 9:1–3

In this paragraph Daniel turned to God in prayer. Verses 1 and 2 give some historical and other background information that explains why Daniel wanted to pray to God at that time.

9:2a

in the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, understood from the sacred books,

in the first year of his reign: This is a repetition of the information in 9:1a. The GNT does not repeat it. Place this information where it is most natural in your language.

I, Daniel, understood from the sacred books: The Hebrew word that the BSB translates as understood here means “perceived, observed.” Daniel learned something from the Scriptures. Other ways to translate this include:

I, Daniel, learned from the Scriptures (GW)

I, Daniel, came to understand from the sacred books (NET)

I found out from studying the writings of the prophets (CEV)

the sacred books: The Hebrew word that the BSB translates as the sacred books is literally “the scrolls” or “the books.” From the context it is clear that these were the holy books or writings of the Jews, the books that we now refer to as the Old Testament Scriptures. The book of Jeremiah was one of these. Refer to these books in a way that is natural in your language. However, your translation should not indicate that these were printed and bound books such as we have today. They were scrolls made of papyrus (made from reeds) or parchment (made from animal skin).

9:2b

according to the word of the LORD to Jeremiah the prophet,

according to the word of the LORD to Jeremiah the prophet: This verse part indicates what specific part of the Scriptures Daniel had been reading. He had been reading the book of Jeremiah. See Jeremiah 25:11–12 and 2 Chronicles 36:21.

In some languages it may be natural to translate this as a separate clause or sentence. For example:

Yahweh had told Jeremiah the prophet that…

the Lord had said to Jeremiah (CEV)

the LORD: The Hebrew name of God that the BSB translates as the LORD is the holy Name that the Jewish people did not pronounce or read aloud. It is written in the Hebrew Scriptures as four consonantal letters (YHWH), the Tetragrammaton, and the vowels originally attached to these letters are not certain. The Name was always read aloud as the Hebrew word meaning “the Lord.” These Notes represent the Name with the English form Yahweh, as does the NJB.

Jeremiah the prophet: An Old Testament prophet was a man sent from God to give a message to the people of Israel. Sometimes this message involved telling about future things and sometimes it did not. See the article KBT Prophet 1(a) and (b). Other ways to translate this include:

Jeremiah the man from God

the man of God named Jeremiah

General Comment on 9:2a-b

“The Scriptures” and “the word of the LORD” are two ways of referring to the same book or books, that is, the Holy Scriptures, or the Word of God. In some languages it may therefore be natural to follow the NLT and reorder the information in these verses, combining the two references to the Word of God into one:

I, Daniel, learned from reading the word of the LORD, as revealed to Jeremiah the prophet (NLT)

9:2c

that the desolation of Jerusalem would last seventy years.

that the desolation of Jerusalem would last seventy years: The Hebrew clause that the BSB translates as the desolation of Jerusalem would last seventy years is more literally “to complete the ruin/destruction of Jerusalem--seventy years.” This indicates that the city of Jerusalem would be ruined and would continue to remain in ruins for seventy years. Other ways to translate this include:

that Jerusalem would be empty ruins for seventy years (NCV)

that Jerusalem must lie desolate for seventy years (NLT)

General Comment on 9:2b-c

In some languages it may be natural to translate God’s word to Jeremiah as direct speech. For example:

the Lord had said to Jeremiah, “Jerusalem will lie in ruins for seventy years.” (CEV)

מִסְפַּ֣ר הַשָּׁנִ֗ים אֲשֶׁ֨ר הָיָ֤ה דְבַר־יְהוָה֙ אֶל־יִרְמִיָ֣ה הַנָּבִ֔יא לְמַלֹּ֛אות לְחָרְב֥וֹת יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם שִׁבְעִ֥ים שָׁנָֽה

Alternate translation: “from the time Jerusalem was destroyed, it would remain in ruins for 70 years”

לְחָרְב֥וֹת

to,the_ruins_of

This means no one would help or rebuild Jerusalem during that time.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

9:2 reading . . . Jeremiah: Daniel apparently had a copy of Jeremiah’s prophecies.
• Jerusalem must lie desolate for seventy years: Jerusalem was destroyed in 586 BC (see 2 Kgs 25:8), and the first return occurred in 538 BC—about 48 years later. The rebuilding of the city began almost at once (see Ezra 3:1-13; Isa 44:28), and the rebuilt Temple was completed in 515 BC—about seventy-one years after it was destroyed (Ezra 6:15). Daniel might have thought of Jerusalem’s “destruction” as having begun with his own exile in 605 BC (see Jer 25:11-12), with sixty-seven years between 605 and 538 BC.
