OET (OET-LV) The one loving the brother of_him, is_remaining in the light, and offense is not in him
OET (OET-RV) It’s the person that loves their fellow believers who is living in the light and doesn’t offend anyone.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / hypo
ὁ ἀγαπῶν τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ, ἐν τῷ φωτὶ μένει
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ὁ ἀγαπῶν τόν ἀδελφόν αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ φωτί μένει καί σκάνδαλον ἐν αὐτῷ οὐκ ἐστίν)
John is suggesting a further hypothetical situation in order to reassure his readers. Alternate translation: [Suppose someone does love his fellow believers. Then he is genuinely doing what is right]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ὁ ἀγαπῶν τόν ἀδελφόν αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ φωτί μένει καί σκάνδαλον ἐν αὐτῷ οὐκ ἐστίν)
See how you translated his brother in [2:9](../02/09.md). Alternate translation: [each fellow believer]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / genericnoun
τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ὁ ἀγαπῶν τόν ἀδελφόν αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ φωτί μένει καί σκάνδαλον ἐν αὐτῷ οὐκ ἐστίν)
If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this term by translating this in the plural, since John is speaking of loving all believers. Alternate translation: [each of his brothers]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
ἐν τῷ φωτὶ μένει
in the in (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ὁ ἀγαπῶν τόν ἀδελφόν αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ φωτί μένει καί σκάνδαλον ἐν αὐτῷ οὐκ ἐστίν)
John is using the word light to mean what is holy, right, and good. Alternate translation: [is genuinely doing what is right]
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
ἐν τῷ φωτὶ μένει
in the in (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ὁ ἀγαπῶν τόν ἀδελφόν αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ φωτί μένει καί σκάνδαλον ἐν αὐτῷ οὐκ ἐστίν)
See the discussion of the term “remain” in Part 3 of the Introduction to 1 John. Here the word seems to describe behavior that is recognized to be genuine because it is consistent. Alternate translation: [is genuinely doing what is right]
Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
σκάνδαλον ἐν αὐτῷ οὐκ ἔστιν
offense in him not (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ὁ ἀγαπῶν τόν ἀδελφόν αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ φωτί μένει καί σκάνδαλον ἐν αὐτῷ οὐκ ἐστίν)
John is using the term stumbling block, which means something that a person would trip over, to mean something that would cause a person to sin. Alternate translation: [he has no reason to sin] or [nothing will cause him to sin]
Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
σκάνδαλον ἐν αὐτῷ οὐκ ἔστιν
offense in him not (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ὁ ἀγαπῶν τόν ἀδελφόν αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ φωτί μένει καί σκάνδαλον ἐν αὐτῷ οὐκ ἐστίν)
John speaks of this stumbling block being in or inside a person because it represents the hatred for a fellow believer that he describes in [2:9](../02/09.md). If it would be helpful to your readers, you could indicate this explicitly. Alternate translation: [he has no hatred inside of him that will cause him to sin]
2:10 To cause others to stumble can also mean to ensnare or entrap them. The Greek word skandalon means a trap or a block in someone’s path. The Gnostics, who taught falsehood about Christ, were hindering people by ensnaring them in error and darkness.
• living in the light: A godly life will help, not hinder, the faith of other Christians.

OET (OET-RV) It’s the person that loves their fellow believers who is living in the light and doesn’t offend anyone.
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
