OET (OET-LV) You_all, what you_all_heard from the_beginning, let_it_be_remaining in you_all.
If it_may_remain in you_all what you_all_heard from the_beginning, you_all also will_be_remaining in the son and in the father.
OET (OET-RV) What you all heard from the beginning, that’s what you should hold to. If the message that you heard from the beginning remains in you, then you also will remain in the son and in the father,
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
ὑμεῖς
you_all
Here John turns from talking about people in general to giving direct instruction to his readers. He indicates this emphasis by beginning his instruction with You. Use a natural way to indicate this emphasis in your language. Alternate translation: [As for you]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
ὃ ἠκούσατε & ὃ & ἠκούσατε
what ˱you_all˲_heard & what & ˱you_all˲_heard
John is referring implicitly to the teaching about Jesus that these believers have heard. Alternate translation: [the teaching you have heard … the teaching you have heard]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
(Occurrence -1) ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὑμεῖς ὃ ἠκούσατε ἀπʼ ἀρχῆς ἐν ὑμῖν μενέτω ἐὰν ἐν ὑμῖν μείνῃ ὃ ἀπʼ ἀρχῆς ἠκούσατε καὶ ὑμεῖς ἐν τῷ Υἱῷ καὶ ἐν τῷ Πατρὶ μενεῖτε)
John uses the phrase from the beginning in various ways in this letter. Here it refers to the time when the people to whom he is writing first believed in Jesus. Alternate translation: [ever since you first believed in Jesus … ever since you first believed in Jesus]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
ἐν ὑμῖν μενέτω & ἐν ὑμῖν μείνῃ
in you_all ˱it˲_/let_be/_remaining & in you_all ˱it˲_/may/_remain
See the discussion of the term “remain” in Part 3 of the Introduction to 1 John. In these instances, in reference to the teaching about Jesus, the word seems to refer to continuing belief in that teaching. Alternate translation: [continue to believe … you continue to believe]
Note 5 topic: grammar-connect-condition-hypothetical
ἐὰν ἐν ὑμῖν μείνῃ ὃ ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς ἠκούσατε, καὶ ὑμεῖς ἐν τῷ Υἱῷ καὶ ἐν τῷ Πατρὶ μενεῖτε
if in you_all ˱it˲_/may/_remain what from /the/_beginning ˱you_all˲_heard also you_all in the Son and in the Father /will_be/_remaining
John is describing a conditional situation in order to reassure his readers. Alternate translation: [As long as what you have heard from the beginning remains in you, then you will also remain in the Son and in the Father]
Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
καὶ ὑμεῖς ἐν τῷ Υἱῷ καὶ ἐν τῷ Πατρὶ μενεῖτε
also you_all in the Son and in the Father /will_be/_remaining
See the discussion of the term “remain” in Part 3 of the Introduction to 1 John. In this instance, it seems to mean the same thing as in 2:6. See how you translated it there. Alternate translation: [you will also continue to have a close relationship with the Son and with the Father]
Note 7 topic: guidelines-sonofgodprinciples
τῷ Υἱῷ & τῷ Πατρὶ
the Son & the Father
Son and Father are important titles for Jesus and God, respectively. Alternate translation: [Jesus the Son of God … God the Father]
2:24-25 John instructs his readers to resist the lies of such antichrists and to remain faithful to the truth that he and the other apostles have proclaimed to them. If they would do this, then they would remain in fellowship with the Son and with the Father and have assurance of eternal life (John 3:15, 36; 6:40, 47, 57; 17:2-3).
If the message that you heard from the beginning remains in you, then you also will remain in the son and in the father,
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
