OET (OET-RV)They were all the Israelis who were counted according to their ancestry, being men who were twenty or older, and capable of going off to battle

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

פְּקוּדֵ֥י

counted_of

If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. The previous verse indicates that Moses, Aaron, and the 12 leaders did the action. Alternate translation: “the ones whom Moses, Aaron, and the 12 leaders counted of”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל

sons_of Yisrael

See how you translated this phrase in [1:2](../01/02.md).

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

לְבֵ֣ית אֲבֹתָ֑ם מִבֶּ֨ן עֶשְׂרִ֤ים שָׁנָה֙ וָמַ֔עְלָה כָּל־יֹצֵ֥א צָבָ֖א בְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל

by,houses_of ancestral_of,their from,son_of twenty year and,more, all/each/any/every going_out war in/on/at/with,Israel

See how you translated these phrases in [1:3](../01/03.md).

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

1:17-46 The tabulation yields the same number of qualified men (603,550) as mentioned in Exod 38:26. Exodus 12:37 and Num 11:21 give an approximate number of 600,000. These numbers have been interpreted in different ways. They might reflect the literal size of this army (cp. Exod 1:9-10); alternatively, the figures might be symbolic, projected backward from a later period, or simply misunderstood in translation. See also study note on Exod 12:37.
