The phrase house of your father could refer to: (1) the clan of Kohath, one of the three major clans within the tribe of Levi. Aaron belonged to this clan. This is how the phrase “house of a father” is used in Numbers 3–4. Alternate translation: [and your ancestral family, the Kohathites,] (2) the tribe of Levi as a whole. This is how the phrase “house of a father” is used in Numbers 17. Alternate translation: [and your tribe, the Levites,]
