Section 14:13–23: Do not cause others to sin

In this section, Paul told the believers in Rome to stop considering some of their fellow believers as bad people. Instead they should choose not to hinder them. He told them that God does not consider any kind of food or any other kind of thing as not acceptable, but people who think that that food or thing is unacceptable, they should not eat it or use it. But those who find those things acceptable, they should not hurt the faith of those who find those things unacceptable. Righteousness, peace, and joy are the important things in God’s kingdom, not what you eat or drink. God is pleased when those who follow Jesus live in that way.

Paul encouraged the believers to do things that bring peace and encouragement for each other. They are not to hurt other believers over what they eat. They are not to cause other believers to stumble in their faith because of what they eat. Foods that might cause problems for other believers are to be eaten privately. A believer should not eat food if he has doubts about whether he should eat it or not. Everything that is not done in faith is sin.

Keep your belief about such matters between yourself and God.

Keep your belief about such matters: There is a textual issue in 14:22a: (1) Some Greek manuscripts have a word that is often translated as which (BSB, RSV, NIV, GNT, NJB, NASB, NABRE, ESV, REB, NLT, GW, NET, NCV). (2) Some Greek manuscripts omit this word (KJV only). It is recommended that you follow option (1). Here the Greek is more literally “Keep your belief.” The word belief refers to faith or deeply held views about such things as what food to eat or whether one should follow the OT rules or not.See Moo (page 861) or Jewett (page 870). In some languages a literal translation would have the wrong meaning. If that is true in your language, you may want to:

Blessed is the one who does not condemn himself by what he approves.

Blessed: The Greek word that the BSB translates as Blessed describes a person who is in a good situation. In the Bible, the good situation results from God showing favor/kindness to the person. It includes the inner happiness a person feels when God forgives him and accepts him. See how you translated this word in 4:7.

the one who does not condemn himself by what he approves: The Greek is more literally “the one not judging himself in what he approves.” It indicates that this person does not cause himself to be condemned because he does what he considers to be good things. Here are other ways to translate this clause:

the one who does not condemn himself by what he approves (NIV11)

those who have no reason to condemn themselves because of what they approve (NRSV)

they can do what they think is right without feeling guilty (NCV)

condemn: Here this phrase refers to acting as a judge. In this context it suggests condemning someone as having done evil. See how you translated this phrase in 14:3 or 14:13 (BSB: “judge”).

approves: Here this word refers to thinking about something and deciding it is good or acceptable. Here it includes, for example, decisions about eating certain foods or not. Here are other ways to translate this word:
