OET (OET-LV)But you why are_judging the brother of_you?
Or also you why are_scorning the brother of_you?
For/Because all we_will_be_standing_before before_the tribunal of_ the _god.

OET (OET-RV)So why are you judging fellow believers and why are you also scorning them, because all of us will end up standing in God’s court of judgement.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 14:1–12: Do not judge/criticize fellow believers and do not despise them

In this section, Paul told his readers that they must accept other believers who are not strong in their faith. These other believers do things that are not based in their faith, hence they are “weak” in their faith. One example that Paul gave of this “weak” faith is someone who avoids meat because it has been devoted to the Roman gods.

Paul also told his readers to not argue over differences of opinion (14:1). In 14:5, he gave an example of this: some believers hold the holy days as something special but other believers do not. Paul reminded his readers that they all belong to the Lord Jesus.

Paul told his readers that they must not judge other believers to be bad people or despise them. He reminded them that they all will stand before God as their judge, and give an account of their deeds.

Here are other possible headings for this section:

Do not consider other believers to be bad people

Do not look down on other believers

14:10a

Why, then, do you judge your brother?

Why, then, do you judge your brother?: This is a rhetorical question. It emphasizes that believers should not judge another believer. It is a rebuke to anyone who does that. Here are some ways to translate that meaning:

then: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as then is often translated as “but” or “and.” However, this verse uses some of the wording from 14:3 and exhorts believers to not pass judgment on a fellow believer or despise him or her. So, the BSB uses then to indicate that Paul is returning to those thoughts. Here is another way to express the idea:

You, then, why… (NIV)

do you judge: Here this phrase refers to considering someone to be a bad person. It does not refer here to what a judge does in a courtroom. See how you translated this phrase in 14:3b.

you: This word is emphasized in the Greek by being first in the clause. If possible, emphasize this word. For example:

As for you, why do you…

Hey you, why do you…

brother: Here this word refers to any believer living in Rome, either man or woman. See how you translated this word in 1:13 or 12:1.

By using the singular brother, Paul referred generally to any believer, where the plural might imply all the believers in Rome. In some languages a simple singular might indicate that Paul was thinking of one specific person. If that is true in your language, translate in a way that can refer generally to one or a few. For example:

some of you, brothers,

14:10b

Or why do you belittle your brother?

Or why do you: The Greek is more literally “Or and/indeed why do you.” The word “and/indeed” emphasizes the following question.

you: This word is emphasized in the Greek, as it is in 14:10a.

why do you belittle your brother?: This is a rhetorical question with the same emphasis as the rhetorical question in 14:10a, except that the word belittle is used here instead of “pass judgment.” Translate this rhetorical question in the same way you did in 14:10, except for the word belittle here.

belittle: This word refers to considering someone to be worthless. See how you translated this word in 14:3a.

14:10c

For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat.

For: Here this word introduces the reason for not despising or passing judgment on a brother.

we will all stand before God’s judgment seat: There is a textual issue in 14:10c: (1) Some Greek manuscripts have the word God (BSB, RSV, NIV, GNT, NJB, NASB, NABRE, ESV, REB, NLT, GW, NET, NCV). (2) Some later Greek manuscripts have the word Christ (KJV only). It is recommended that you follow option (1). This refers to standing before God when he will judge us on the final judgment day. Here are other ways to translate this clause:

All of us will stand before God to be judged by him. (GNT)

The day is coming when God will judge all of us. (CEV)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / youcrowd

σὺ & κρίνεις & σου & σὺ & ἐξουθενεῖς & σου

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: σύ Δέ τί κρίνεις τόν ἀδελφόν σοῦ Ἤ καί σύ τί ἐξουθενεῖς τόν ἀδελφόν σοῦ πάντες Γάρ παραστησόμεθα τῷ βήματι τοῦ Θεοῦ)

Even though Paul is writing to a group of people, you and your here are singular. If the singular form would not be natural in your language for someone who was speaking to a group of people, you could use the plural form of you in your translation.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

τί κρίνεις τὸν ἀδελφόν σου? ἢ καὶ σὺ τί ἐξουθενεῖς τὸν ἀδελφόν σου?

why ˓are˒_judging why (Some words not found in SR-GNT: σύ Δέ τί κρίνεις τόν ἀδελφόν σοῦ Ἤ καί σύ τί ἐξουθενεῖς τόν ἀδελφόν σοῦ πάντες Γάρ παραστησόμεθα τῷ βήματι τοῦ Θεοῦ)

Paul is using two questions here to emphasize that Christians should not judge each other. If you would not use a rhetorical question for this purpose in your language, you could translate his words as a statement or an exclamation and communicate the emphasis in another way. Alternate translation: [you have no right to judge your brother! And you also have no right to despise your brother!]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / gendernotations

(Occurrence -1) τὸν ἀδελφόν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: σύ Δέ τί κρίνεις τόν ἀδελφόν σοῦ Ἤ καί σύ τί ἐξουθενεῖς τόν ἀδελφόν σοῦ πάντες Γάρ παραστησόμεθα τῷ βήματι τοῦ Θεοῦ)

Here, brother refers to a fellow Christian. See how you translated “brothers” in [1:13](../01/13.md).

Note 4 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

γὰρ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: σύ Δέ τί κρίνεις τόν ἀδελφόν σοῦ Ἤ καί σύ τί ἐξουθενεῖς τόν ἀδελφόν σοῦ πάντες Γάρ παραστησόμεθα τῷ βήματι τοῦ Θεοῦ)

For indicates that what follows this word explains what came before it. For here indicates that what follows is the reason why Christians should not judge each other. Use a natural way in your language for indicating a reason. Alternate translation: [Do not judge others due to the fact that]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

πάντες & παραστησόμεθα τῷ βήματι τοῦ Θεοῦ

all & ˱we˲_˓will_be˒_standing_before ˱before˲_the tribunal ¬the ˱of˲_God

Here, present ourselves before refers to standing in front of a judge in order to be judged, and the judgment seat of God refers to the place where God judges. Paul means that all believers will be judged by God. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [we will all be judged by God]

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
