OET (OET-LV)If for because_of food, the brother of_you is_being_sorrowed, no_longer according_to love you_are_walking.
Not with_the food of_you that one be_destroying, because/for whom chosen_one/messiah died_off.

OET (OET-RV)If a fellow believer is upset because of the food you eat, then you’re no longer acting in love. Don’t destroy the faith of someone that Messiah died for, just for the sake of food.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 14:13–23: Do not cause others to sin

In this section, Paul told the believers in Rome to stop considering some of their fellow believers as bad people. Instead they should choose not to hinder them. He told them that God does not consider any kind of food or any other kind of thing as not acceptable, but people who think that that food or thing is unacceptable, they should not eat it or use it. But those who find those things acceptable, they should not hurt the faith of those who find those things unacceptable. Righteousness, peace, and joy are the important things in God’s kingdom, not what you eat or drink. God is pleased when those who follow Jesus live in that way.

Paul encouraged the believers to do things that bring peace and encouragement for each other. They are not to hurt other believers over what they eat. They are not to cause other believers to stumble in their faith because of what they eat. Foods that might cause problems for other believers are to be eaten privately. A believer should not eat food if he has doubts about whether he should eat it or not. Everything that is not done in faith is sin.

Here are other possible headings for this section:

Do Not Cause Another to Stumble (ESV)

Don’t Cause Problems for Others (CEV)

14:15a

If your brother is distressed by what you eat,

The Greek of 14:15a begins with a word that is often translated as “for.”There is a textual issue in 14:15: (1) Some Greek manuscripts have the word for (NASB, ESV, NET). (2) Some later Greek manuscripts have the word and/but (KJV only). It is recommended that you follow option (1). Many English versions chose not to translate this word here, and a few chose a different word or phrase, perhaps because of the context. This word introduces an explanation of 14:13b–c.See Moo (page 853), Morris, (page 487), Cranfield (page 714), or Dunn (page 820). But with 14:14 occurring in between, some English versions omit this word, as the BSB does.

brother: Here this word refers to another believer, either man or woman. Here are other ways to translate this word:

another believer (NLT)

others (GNT)

is distressed: This word refers to being sad and distressed about something. It does not refer here to being sad because someone has died.

14:15b

you are no longer acting in love.

you are no longer acting in love: Here the Greek word that the BSB translates as acting is literally “walking/living.” It is a figure of speech that refers to all that a person does, thinks, and says. Here are some ways to translate this clause:

you are no longer acting: The words no longer indicate that earlier the person was walking in love but now is not doing that. The present tense indicates that this is how the person lives at this time. Here are other ways to translate this phrase:

you have stopped acting

you stopped living your life

you have stopped loving others as you live on this earth

in love: The Greek word that the BSB translates as in is literally “according to.” The phrase refers to loving others. See the examples above.

14:15c

Do not by your eating destroy your brother, for whom Christ died.

Do not by your eating destroy your brother, for whom Christ died: In the Greek of 14:15c, the phrase by your eating is in the front of the clause to emphasize it (see the ESV). If possible, emphasize this phrase in a natural way in your language.

by your eating: This refers to food that some believers think it is not right for believers to eat. In particular, some Jewish believers in Jesus still followed the Jewish rules about food. So there were many foods in Rome that they believed it was not right to eat. But Roman believers did not follow the Jewish rules about food and ate those foods. Paul just said it was okay to eat such foods, but we must think of the Jewish believers because it would be a sin for them to eat those foods. Paul probably wrote about the weekly meal the believers ate together at their worship time.Jewett (page 861). So all believers would see all the various kinds of food that everyone brought.

Some of this information may be needed to make the meaning clear in your translation. For example:

By what you eat in front of other believers

destroy: Here this refers to ruining a believer’s faith so that he falls at the final judgment of God. Here are other ways to translate this word:

cause the ruin of (RSV)

be the ruin of (REB)

destroy the faith ofKankanaey Back Translation on TW.

your brother, for whom Christ died: This indicates that Jesus died to save this believer. In some languages the purpose of dying would make the meaning more clear. For example:

your brother, for whom Christ died so that he could save him

For indicates that what follows this word explains what came before it. For here indicates that what follows is the reason why what Paul’s readers should obey the command he gave in [14:13](../14/13.md). Use a natural way in your language for indicating a reason. Alternate translation: [“Do not place a stumbling block before your brother because, if on account of food,]”

This phrase refers to a Christian eating food that another Christians thinks is unclean, as mentioned in the previous verse and [14:2–6](../14/02.md). If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: [over the matter of food] or [because of what you eat]

Even though Paul is writing to a group of people, your and you here are singular. If the singular form would not be natural in your language for someone who was speaking to a group of people, you could use the plural form of “you” in your translation.

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / gendernotations

ὁ ἀδελφός

Here, brother refers to a fellow Christian. See how you translated this word in [14:10](../14/10.md).

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

λυπεῖται

˓is_being˒_sorrowed

Here, hurt refers to experiencing emotional or spiritual offense or suffering. It does not refer to being physically injured. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [is offended]

Here Paul uses walking to refer to how people behave or live their lives. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. See similar uses of “walk” in [6:4](../06/04.md), [8:4](../08/04.md), and [13:13](../13/13.md). Alternate translation: [you are no longer behaving according to love]

Paul uses destroy here to refer to causing someone to stop trusting in Jesus, which will result in that person experiencing punishment forever in hell. See how you translated “destruction” in [9:22](../09/22.md). Alternate translation: [Do not cause that one from whom Christ died to stop trusting in Jesus and experience eternal destruction]

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
