OET (OET-LV)If for both we_may_be_living, to_the master we_are_living, and if we_may_be_dying_off, to_the master we_are_dying_off.
If therefore both we_may_be_living, and if we_may_be_dying_off, of_the master we_are.

OET (OET-RV)If we keep living then we’re living for the master, and if we die, then we’re dying for the master, so whether we live or die we belong to the master

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 14:1–12: Do not judge/criticize fellow believers and do not despise them

In this section, Paul told his readers that they must accept other believers who are not strong in their faith. These other believers do things that are not based in their faith, hence they are “weak” in their faith. One example that Paul gave of this “weak” faith is someone who avoids meat because it has been devoted to the Roman gods.

Paul also told his readers to not argue over differences of opinion (14:1). In 14:5, he gave an example of this: some believers hold the holy days as something special but other believers do not. Paul reminded his readers that they all belong to the Lord Jesus.

Paul told his readers that they must not judge other believers to be bad people or despise them. He reminded them that they all will stand before God as their judge, and give an account of their deeds.

Here are other possible headings for this section:

Do not consider other believers to be bad people

Do not look down on other believers

14:8a

If we live, we live to the Lord,

If: Here this word introduces an explanation of 14:7.Moo (page 844).

we live, we live to the Lord: Here the phrase to the Lord refers to benefiting the Lord. When we are alive, we do what the Lord tells us to do. This honors him. Here are other ways to translate these clauses:

while we are alive, we are living for the Lord (NJB)

If we live, we honor the Lord (GW)

when we live, we live for the sake of the Lord

Translate the word to in a similar way to how you translated it in 14:7.

14:8b

and if we die, we die to the Lord.

if we die, we die to the Lord: This refers to the end of our life on earth. The phrase to the Lord again refers to benefiting the Lord. When we die, this honors the Lord, because we die believing in him. Here are other ways to translate these clauses:

when we die, we die for the Lord (NJB)

if we die, we honor the Lord (GW)

when we die, we die for the sake of the Lord

If possible, translate the word to in a similar way to how you translated it in 14:8a.

14:8c

So whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.

So whether: The Greek word here is usually translated as “therefore,” as the NASB does.

we belong to the Lord: This clause indicates that we belong to the Lord Jesus. For example:

we are the Lord’s (ESV)

γὰρ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ἐάν τέ γάρ ζῶμεν τῷ Κυρίῳ ζῶμεν ἐάν τέ ἀποθνῄσκωμεν τῷ Κυρίῳ ἀποθνῄσκομεν Ἐάν τέ οὖν ζῶμεν ἐάν τέ ἀποθνῄσκωμεν τοῦ Κυρίου ἐσμέν)

For indicates that what follows this word explains what came before it. For here indicates that what follows in this verse explains what Paul said in the previous verse. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a different expression. Alternate translation: [In fact,]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / exclusive

ζῶμεν & ζῶμεν & ἀποθνῄσκωμεν & ἀποθνῄσκομεν & ζῶμεν & ἀποθνῄσκωμεν & ἐσμέν

˱we˲_˓may_be˒_living & ˱we˲_˓are˒_living & ˱we˲_˓may_be˒_dying_off & ˱we˲_˓are˒_dying_off & ˱we˲_˓may_be˒_living & ˱we˲_˓may_be˒_dying_off & ˱we˲_are

In this verse we refers to Paul and his Christian readers, so we would be inclusive. Your language may require you to mark this form.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

(Occurrence -1) τῷ Κυρίῳ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ἐάν τέ γάρ ζῶμεν τῷ Κυρίῳ ζῶμεν ἐάν τέ ἀποθνῄσκωμεν τῷ Κυρίῳ ἀποθνῄσκομεν Ἐάν τέ οὖν ζῶμεν ἐάν τέ ἀποθνῄσκωμεν τοῦ Κυρίου ἐσμέν)

Here, for the Lord means to do something only to benefit the Lord. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: [for the benefit of the Lord … for the benefit of the Lord]

Note 4 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

οὖν

therefore

The word Therefore indicates that what follows is a logical conclusion. Therefore here indicates that what follows is the logical conclusion to what Paul has stated in [14:14–20](../14/14.md). Use a natural way in your language for indicating result. Alternate translation: [As a result]

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
