OET (OET-LV)For/Because as by the one disobedience of_the man, sinners were_appointed the many, thus also by the obedience of_the one man, righteous will_be_being_appointed the many.

OET (OET-RV)The disobedience of one man caused many people to be made sinners, so also the obedience of one man caused many people to be made guiltless.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 5:12–21: We die because of Adam but live because of Jesus

In this section Paul compared the result of Adam’s sin in the Garden of Eden with the result of Jesus Christ’s sacrifice. Through the sin of Adam, the punishment of death came to all people whether they sinned like him or not. But through the sacrifice of Jesus, the gift of righteousness was given to all who believe.

Here are other possible headings for this section:

Adam and Christ (CEV)

Paul compared Adam and/with Jesus

The Results Of What Adam Did And What Jesus DidBased on Kankanaey Back Translation on TW.

5:19a

For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners,

For: This word introduces an explanation of 5:18.

through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners: This clause indicates that Adam disobeyed God and that deed caused God to consider all people as sinners. Here are other ways to translate this clause:

many were made sinners because just one person disobeyed

one man disobeyed God and so God called the many people who came after that man sinners

Adam, he did not submit to God’s command, with the result that many people became sinnersUma Back Translation on TW.

Paul also used were made to be consistent with “will be made” in 5:19b to help show the difference in the meaning between the two clauses. If possible use the same word or phrase in both clauses.

the many: Here this phrase refers to a large number of people. Here it refers to “all men” (5:18a, b). The same issue occurs in 5:15. Here again the BSB has translated the Greek article that means the.

5:19b

so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.

through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous: This clause indicates that Jesus obeyed God even to death on a cross and that deed caused God to consider all believers as righteous. Here are other ways to translate this clause:

many were made righteous because just one person obeyed

one man obeyed God and so God called many people righteous

Jesus, he submitted to God’s command, with the result that many people became righteous

the many: See how you translated this in 5:19a.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
