OET (OET-LV)in_order_that as reigned the sin in the death, thus also the grace may_reign through righteousness, to life eternal through Yaʸsous chosen_one/messiah the master of_us.

OET (OET-RV)so that just as sin reigned in death, so also grace now reigns through righteousness, leading to eternal life through our master Yeshua Messiah.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 5:12–21: We die because of Adam but live because of Jesus

In this section Paul compared the result of Adam’s sin in the Garden of Eden with the result of Jesus Christ’s sacrifice. Through the sin of Adam, the punishment of death came to all people whether they sinned like him or not. But through the sacrifice of Jesus, the gift of righteousness was given to all who believe.

Here are other possible headings for this section:

Adam and Christ (CEV)

Paul compared Adam and/with Jesus

The Results Of What Adam Did And What Jesus DidBased on Kankanaey Back Translation on TW.

5:21a–b

so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness: The phrase so that introduces the purpose of grace abounding all the more (5:20c). The purpose is that grace will reign.

Paul included a comparison to sin reigning in this purpose clause. In some languages it is more clear or more natural to have the comparison to sin after. For example:

so that grace might reign through righteousness, like/as sin reigned in death,

5:21a

so that, just as sin reigned in death,

sin reigned: This clause speaks of sin as if it were a person. It indicates that all people sin. Some languages can translate the figure of speech literally and people will understand the correct meaning. For example:

sin ruled (GNT)

But some languages must translate the meaning of the figure of speech. For example:

sin had power over all who lived

See how you translated reigned in 5:14.

in death: Here this phrase is a figure of speech. It indicates that sin was like a king in the land of death.Moo (on TW) says: “Death has its own dominion: humanity as determined, and dominated, by Adam. And in this dominion, sin is in control.” Schreiner (page 296) says, “Death is portrayed as a power that rules over all (‘death reigned from Adam to Moses,’ v. 14…).” Some languages can translate the figure of speech literally and people will understand the correct meaning.

But some languages must translate the meaning of the figure of speech. For example:

in the land of death

in this world of death

5:21b

so also grace might reign through righteousness

grace might reign: This clause speaks of grace as if it were a person. It indicates that God is kind to all people. Some languages can translate the figure of speech literally and people will understand the correct meaning. For example:

grace will/might rule

But some languages must translate the meaning of the figure of speech. For example:

grace will have power over all who lived

through righteousness: This phrase refers to God making believers righteous.Dunn (page 287) says, “Here again the sense should not be forcibly confined to the sense ‘status of righteousness’ (Cranfield), but must at least include the sense of God’s action.” Here are other ways to translate this phrase:

by means of righteousness (GNT)

by making people right with him (NCV)

5:21c

to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

to bring eternal life: When God declares believers righteous, the result is eternal life. Here are other ways to translate this phrase:

and resulting in eternal life (NLT)

This means that we will have eternal life (CEV)

through Jesus Christ our Lord: Believers receive righteousness and eternal life because of what Jesus did for them.

In this division Paul showed that God has made a way to rescue people from being punished for wrongdoing and put them in a right relationship with himself.

Here are other possible headings for this division:

We must live as dead to sin and the Laws of Moses and live in the Holy Spirit

Living free from sin and the law and living in the Holy Spirit

ἵνα

in_order_that

The phrase so that here introduces a purpose clause. Paul is stating the purpose for which God caused grace to abound, as stated in the previous verse. Use a natural way in your language for introducing a purpose clause. Alternate translation (without a comma preceding): [for the purpose that]

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
