OET (OET-LV)Not and only that, but also we_are_boasting in our tribulations, having_known that the tribulation endurance is_producing,

OET (OET-RV)Not only that, but we are also boasting even though we’re still being persecuted, because we know that difficulties produce endurance

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 5:1–11: Good fruit/things in our lives because we believe

In this section, Paul started by saying that God has made people right with him because they believed in Jesus. From that, believers have peace with God and his grace. Believers rejoice about the future blessings as well as sufferings here on earth. Suffering causes us to endure, do what is right, and have hope for a better future.

God showed how much he loves us by sending Christ to die for us when we were still rejecting him. Jesus also saves us from God’s anger and reconciled us to God, and so we can rejoice.

Here are other possible headings for this section:

Results of Justification (NRSV)

Peace with God Through Faith (ESV)

Some things we experience because we believe in Jesus

5:3a

Not only that, but we also rejoice in our sufferings,

Not only that, but: The Greek is literally “and not only but also.” Here it indicates that Paul wanted to talk about more things that believers rejoice in. Here are other ways to translate this phrase:

More than that, but (ESV)

Not only so, but…also (NIV)

And it is not only that that we are happy-about but rather…alsoKankanaey Back Translation on TW.

we also rejoice in our sufferings: This is the second thing that believers rejoice/boast in. We can rejoice/boast even when we suffer because we know the results will be good (5:3b–5:4b).

rejoice: The Greek word here is literally “boast,” as in 5:2c. Translate it in the same way here.

in our sufferings: Here the Greek is more literally “in the sufferings.” In the NT the word sufferings usually refers to the hardships and troubles people experience because they are believers in Jesus. So many English versions add the word our here. Here are other ways to translate this phrase:

in our troubles

in our tribulations (NASB)

when we are suffering (GW)

5:3b

because we know that suffering produces perseverance;

because we know that suffering produces perseverance: Here the Greek word that the BSB translates as because we know implies that 5:3b–4b are reasons for rejoicing/boasting in our sufferings.

produces: The word produces means “to cause.” For example:

creates (GW)

develops (NJB)

perseverance: This word means “patiently continuing in something.” When troubles come, believers continue to believe in Jesus. They do not give up. Here are other ways to translate this word:

endurance (ESV)

patience (NCV)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-pronouns

οὐ μόνον δέ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Οὒ μόνον δέ ἀλλά καί καυχώμεθα ἐν ταῖς θλίψεσιν εἰδότες ὅτι ἡ θλῖψις ὑπομονήν κατεργάζεται)

The pronoun this here refers to boasting about “the hope of the glory of God,” as mentioned in the previous verse. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: [And we not only boast on the basis of the hope of the glory of God]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

καὶ καυχώμεθα ἐν ταῖς θλίψεσιν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Οὒ μόνον δέ ἀλλά καί καυχώμεθα ἐν ταῖς θλίψεσιν εἰδότες ὅτι ἡ θλῖψις ὑπομονήν κατεργάζεται)

Here, in our sufferings could mean: (1) believers can boast about their sufferings. Alternate translation: [we can also boast about our sufferings] (2) believers can boast while they are experiencing sufferings. Alternate translation: [we can also boast when we are distressed]

Note 3 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

εἰδότες

˓having˒_known

Here, knowing indicates that what follows in this verse and the next verse are the reasons why believers can boast in our sufferings. Use a natural way in your language for introducing reasons. Alternate translation: [since we know]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

ἐν ταῖς θλίψεσιν & ἡ θλῖψις & ὑπομονὴν

in our tribulations & ¬the tribulation & (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Οὒ μόνον δέ ἀλλά καί καυχώμεθα ἐν ταῖς θλίψεσιν εἰδότες ὅτι ἡ θλῖψις ὑπομονήν κατεργάζεται)

If your language does not use abstract nouns for the ideas of sufferings, suffering, and endurance, you could express the same ideas with verbal forms. Alternate translation: [when we suffer … when we suffer, it … a way to endure]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ἡ θλῖψις ὑπομονὴν κατεργάζεται

¬the tribulation (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Οὒ μόνον δέ ἀλλά καί καυχώμεθα ἐν ταῖς θλίψεσιν εἰδότες ὅτι ἡ θλῖψις ὑπομονήν κατεργάζεται)

Paul speaks of endurance as if it were an object that could be produced. He means that when Christians trust in God while suffering, they develop greater endurance than they had before experiencing suffering. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [this suffering helps us know how to endure]
