OET (OET-LV)for/because until the_law, sin was in world, but sin not is_being_imputed, not being the_law.

OET (OET-RV)Sin was in the world before Mosheh’s law, but it wasn’t being charged against them, because the law had not yet been given.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 5:12–21: We die because of Adam but live because of Jesus

In this section Paul compared the result of Adam’s sin in the Garden of Eden with the result of Jesus Christ’s sacrifice. Through the sin of Adam, the punishment of death came to all people whether they sinned like him or not. But through the sacrifice of Jesus, the gift of righteousness was given to all who believe.

Here are other possible headings for this section:

5:13a

For sin was in the world before the law was given;

For: This word introduces an explanation. The explanation is about something in the clause “death was passed on to all men, because all sinned” (5:12c).

sin was in the world before the law was given: This clause indicates that people did things that God did not want before he gave the law to Moses. This would be deeds like murder, stealing, and hurting others.

The phrase sin was in the world is a figure of speech. Some languages can translate the figure of speech literally and people will understand the correct meaning. But some languages must explain the meaning of the figure of speech. For example:

the ways of sin were in the world before the law was given

sin was like a force/power that existed in the world before the law was given

The Greek of this clause can be translated literally as “before the law sin was in the world.” The phrase before the law is emphasized in the Greek. Here are other ways to translate that emphasis:

indeed, before the law was given, sin was in the world

sin was in the world, and that before the law!

the law was given: This clause is passive. Some languages must use an active clause. For example:

God gave the law

the law: This refers to the laws that God gave to Moses. In some languages this implied information must be explicit for the correct meaning. For example:

the law through Moses

5:13b

but sin is not taken into account when there is no law.

sin is not taken into account: This clause is passive. Some languages must use an active clause. For example:

God did not count sin

taken into account: The Greek word here refers to writing in a book what someone has done. Sins that were committed before the law existed were not recorded as breaking that law. Here are other ways to translate this word:

it was not counted as sin (NLT)

sin is not charged against anyone’s account where there is no law (NIV11)

uW Translation Notes:

γὰρ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἄχρι γάρ νόμου ἁμαρτία ἦν ἐν κόσμῳ ἁμαρτία δέ οὐκ ἐλλογεῖται μή ὄντος νόμου)

For here indicates that what follows in [5:13–14](../05/13.md) explains what came before it. Here it explains how death and sin existed before the law. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a different expression. Alternate translation: [In fact,]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

ἄχρι γὰρ νόμου & μὴ ὄντος νόμου

until (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἄχρι γάρ νόμου ἁμαρτία ἦν ἐν κόσμῳ ἁμαρτία δέ οὐκ ἐλλογεῖται μή ὄντος νόμου)

Paul is leaving out some of the words that a sentence would need in many languages to be complete. If it would be helpful in your language, you could supply these words from the context. Alternate translation: [For until the law came … as that was when there was no law]

Note 3 topic: grammar-collectivenouns

νόμου & νόμου

˓the˒_law & ˓the˒_law

In this verse law refers to the laws that God gave the Jews. See how you translated law in [2:12](../02/12.md).

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

ἁμαρτία & ἁμαρτία

sin & sin

See how you translated sin in the previous verse.

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ἁμαρτία ἦν ἐν κόσμῳ

sin was in world

Here Paul speaks of sin as if it were an object that could exist in a place. Paul means that people sinned in the world before God gave his laws to Moses. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [people sinned in the world]

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ἁμαρτία δὲ οὐκ ἐλλογεῖται

sin sin (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἄχρι γάρ νόμου ἁμαρτία ἦν ἐν κόσμῳ ἁμαρτία δέ οὐκ ἐλλογεῖται μή ὄντος νόμου)

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. If you must state who did the action, Paul implies that “God” did it. Alternate translation: [but God did not charge them with sinning] or [but God did not reckon it as sin]

ἁμαρτία δὲ οὐκ ἐλλογεῖται

sin sin (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἄχρι γάρ νόμου ἁμαρτία ἦν ἐν κόσμῳ ἁμαρτία δέ οὐκ ἐλλογεῖται μή ὄντος νόμου)

Alternate translation: [but a record of sin is not kept] or [but no account is kept of sins]

Note 7 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

μὴ ὄντος νόμου

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἄχρι γάρ νόμου ἁμαρτία ἦν ἐν κόσμῳ ἁμαρτία δέ οὐκ ἐλλογεῖται μή ὄντος νόμου)

Here, being could indicate: (1) the reason why sin is not charged. Alternate translation: [because there was no law] (2) the time when sin is not charged. Alternate translation: [when there was no law]

Note 8 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

μὴ ὄντος νόμου

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἄχρι γάρ νόμου ἁμαρτία ἦν ἐν κόσμῳ ἁμαρτία δέ οὐκ ἐλλογεῖται μή ὄντος νόμου)

Here, no law implies that God had not yet given people his laws that could help them identify what sin is. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: [being no law to identify to people what sin is]

OET (OET-LV)for/because until the_law, sin was in world, but sin not is_being_imputed, not being the_law.

OET (OET-RV)Sin was in the world before Mosheh’s law, but it wasn’t being charged against them, because the law had not yet been given.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
