Note: This view shows ‘verses’ which are not natural language units and hence sometimes only part of a sentence will be visible—click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for doing comparisons of different translations—the older translations are further down the page (so you can read up from the bottom to trace the English translation history). The OET segments on this page are still very early looks into the unfinished texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible—please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

8:2-6 This scene of preparation in heaven introduces the seven trumpets of judgment and continues the theme of God’s receiving and answering prayer (5:8; 6:9-11).
In this section, the Lamb opened the seventh seal and heaven was quiet for half an hour. Then seven angels were each given trumpets. Another angel came to the altar with a bowl for burning incense. He was given incense and offered it on the altar. The angel then used the bowl to gather burning coals from the altar. He threw the burning coals upon the earth.
Other examples of headings for this section are:
The Seventh Seal (GNT)
The Seventh Seal and the Golden Censer (NRSV)
And the smoke of the incense, together with the prayers of the saints,
And the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the believers,
The smoke from the incense and the prayers of God’s holy people
And the smoke of the incense: As the incense burned, it produced sweet-smelling smoke. For example:
The smoke coming from the incense (NET)
rose up before God from the hand of the angel.
rose before God from the incense that came from the angel’s hand.
rose together and went to God from where the angel put it on the altar.
from the hand of the angel: This phrase indicates that the angel used his hand to put the incense on the altar. The smoke came from the incense on the coals on the altar.
In some languages a literal translation would wrongly indicate that the smoke came from the hand of the angel. If that is true in your language, you may want to explain the meaning in your translation. For example:
from the incense that came from the angel’s hand
when the angel placed it there
from the altar where the angel had poured them out (NLT)
In some languages it is more natural to place the phrase “together with the prayers of the saints” at the end of the sentence. For example:
4a–band the smoke of the incense from the angel’s hand went up before God with his people’s prayers. (REB)
It is implied that the angel offered the incense. In some languages it is more natural to include the implied information in the translation. For example:
3bHe was given much incense to offer 3cwith the prayers of all God’s holy people. 3dThe angel put this offering on the golden altar before the throne. 4a–bThe smoke from the incense went up from the angel’s hand to God with the prayers of God’s people. (NCV)
3bHe was given a lot of incense to offer 3don the gold altar in front of the throne. He offered it 3cwith the prayers of all of God’s people. 4a–bThe smoke from the incense went up from the angel’s hand to God along with the prayers of God’s people. (GW)
