10:1 Peter and Cornelius each hear from God

10Just up in Caesarea there was a Roman army commander named Cornelius (leader of the ‘Italian Regiment’) 2who, along with all his household, worshipped God and obeyed his laws. He gave to the poor and regularly asked God for help. 3One afternoon around 3pm he had a vision where he clearly saw one of God’s messengers come into the house and call, “Cornelius.”

4Cornelius was scared and looked intently and asked, “What is it, master?”

Your prayers and your helping the poor rose up to God’s notice and attention,” he said. 5“Now, send some messengers to Yoppa to go and find a man there named Simon Peter. 6He’s staying with Simon the tanner whose house is by the sea.” 7So as soon as the messenger left, Cornelius called two of his house servants and a godly soldier from his bodyguard, 8and after explaining the task to them, he sent them off to Yoppa.

9The next day as they were approaching the town, Peter went up onto the flat roof of the house around midday to pray. 10But he felt hungry and wanted something to eat, but while it was still being prepared he fell into a trance 11and saw the sky open up. Something like a sheet was being lowered down to the earth by the four corners 12and it held all kinds of animals and reptiles, as well as birds. 13Then he heard a voice saying, “Get up Peter, and slaughter these and eat them.”

14“I can’t, master,” Peter responded, “because I’ve never eaten anything that’s forbidden.”

15But the voice spoke a second time, “Don’t you be treating anything as unclean that God has made clean.” 16This vision happened three times and then the sheet thing was lifted back up into the sky.

17Now Peter was still there wondering what the vision was all about when the men sent by Cornelius had tracked down the tanner’s house and arrived outside. 18They called out to ask if Simon Peter was staying there.

19Even as Peter still continued to ponder about the vision, the spirit said, “Hey, there’s three men here looking for you. 20So get up and go downstairs to them. Believe everything they say because I sent them here.” 21So he went down and asked the men, “I’m the one you’re looking for, so tell me what you came here for.”

22They answered, “We were sent by Cornelius who’s an army commander who worships God and obeys his laws and has a good reputation with you Jewish people. A holy messenger told him to send for you to come to his house so they can listen to what you have to say.” 23So Peter invited them in to stay the night.

The next day, Peter and some of the believers from Yoppa started out with them 24and they arrived in Caesarea the following day. Cornelius was expecting them and had also invited some relatives and close friends to join them. 25Peter entered the house and when they met, Cornelius knelt down and worshipped him 26but Peter pulled him up and said, “Stand up. I’m just a man like you.” 27After greeting each other, Peter went into the main room and found that quite a few people had gathered there. 28Then he told them, “You all know that us Jews are forbidden by our laws to associate with or to enter the house of a non-Jew. However, God showed me that it’s not right to treat other people as being lesser or undesirable. 29That’s why I came without any reservations when you sent for me. But I’m still waiting to know what you all want from me?”

30So Cornelius answered, “I was praying in my house three days ago in the middle of the afternoon when I suddenly saw a man in shining clothes standing in front of me 31and he said, ‘Your prayer has been heard, Cornelius, and God has noticed your gifts to the poor. 32Now he wants you to send messengers to get Simon, the one called Peter, from Yoppa where he’s living by the sea in Simon the tanner’s house.’ 33I did that straight away and you kindly came here, so now we’re all here in God’s sight to find out everything that the master has commanded you to say.”

10And a_ certain _man in Kaisareia by_the_name Kornaʸlios, a_centurion of of_the_Cohort which being_called from_Italia, 2devout and revering the god with all the household of_him, doing many alms to_the people, and beseeching of_ the _god through everything.
3About the_ninth hour of_the day he_saw in a_vision clearly, as_if, an_messenger of_ the _god having_come_in to him, and having_said to_him:
Kornaʸlios.
4And he, having_looked_intently at_him and having_become frightened, said:
What is_it, master?
And he_said to_him:
The prayers of_you, and the alms of_you, went_up for a_memorial before the god.
5And now send men to Yoppaʸ, and send_for a_certain Simōn, who is_being_called Petros.
6This one is_being_lodged with a_certain Simōn a_tanner, whose house is by the_sea.
7And when the messenger which speaking to_him, went_away, having_called two of_the house_servants and a_ devout _soldier of_the ones continuing with_him, 8and having_explained all things to_them, he_sent_ them _out to the Yoppaʸ.
9And on_the day of_next, those journeying and nearing to_the city, Petros went_up on the housetop to_pray, about the_hour sixth.
10But he_became hungry and was_wanting to_taste, but them preparing, a_trance became on him, 11and he_is_observing the heaven having_been_opened_up, and an_ certain _object coming_down, as a_ by_four _linen_sheet, great corners being_let_down on the earth, 12in which was_being all the quadrupeds, and reptiles of_the earth, and birds of_the sky.
13And a_voice became to him:
Having_risen_up, Petros, sacrifice and eat.
14But the Petros said:
By_no_means, master, because I_ never _ate any common and unclean thing.
15And a_voice said again for the_second time to him:
What the god cleansed, you be_ not _defiling.
16And this became for three-times, and immediately the object was_taken_up into the heaven.
17And while the Petros by himself was_thoroughly_perplexing, what wishfully might_be the vision that he_saw, see, the men which having_been_sent_out from the Kornaʸlios, having_inquired for_the house of_ the _Simōn, stood_by at the gate.
18And having_called, they_were_inquiring if Simōn, who is being_called Petros, is_being_lodged here.
19And the Petros pondering about the vision, the spirit said, to_him:
Behold, three men are_seeking you.
20But having_risen_up, come_down and be_going with them, doubting nothing, because I have_sent_ them _out.
21And Petros having_come_down, to the men said:
Behold, I am whom you_all_are_seeking, what is the cause for which you_all_are_coming?
22And they said:
Kornaʸlios a_centurion, righteous man and revering the god, and being_attested by all the nation of_the Youdaiōns, was_called by an_ holy _messenger, to_send_for you to the house of_him, and to_hear messages from you.
23Therefore having_called_ them _in.
he_lodged.
And on_the day of_next having_risen_up, he_came_out with them, and some of_the brothers which from Yoppaʸ came_together with_him.
24And on_the day of_next, he_came_in into the Kaisareia.
And the Kornaʸlios was expecting them, having_called_together the relatives of_him and the close friends.
25And as it_became which the Petros, to_come_in Kornaʸlios having_met with_him the, having_fallen at his feet, he_prostrated him.
26But the Petros raised him saying:
Rise_up, I also myself am a_human.
27And conversing with_him, he_came_in and he_is_finding many having_come_together.
28And he_was_saying to them:
You_all are_knowing how unlawful it_is for_a_ Youdaiōns _man to_be_being_joined_together or to_be_approaching to_an_other_tribe.
The god to_and_ showed _me, to_be_calling not_one a_person common or unclean.
29Therefore also having_been_sent_for I_came unquestionably.
Therefore I_am_inquiring for_what statement you_all_sent_for me?
30And the Kornaʸlios was_saying:
From fourth day until this the hour, I_was praying in the house of_me the ninth hour, and see, a_man stood before me in shining clothing,
31and he_is_saying:
Kornaʸlios, the prayer of_you was_listened_to and the alms of_you were_reminded before the god.
32Therefore send to Yoppaʸ and summon Simōn, who is_being_called Petros, this one is_being_lodged in the_house of_Simōn, a_tanner by the_sea.
33Therefore I_ immediately _sent to you, and you did well therefore.
having_arrived now we all are_being_present before the god, to_hear all the things having_been_commanded to_you by the master.

10:34 Peter’s talk in Caesarea

34So Peter spoke up and said, “Honestly, I’m still just realising that God doesn’t favour only certain people,[ref] 35but he accepts people from any nation as long as they honour and obey him. 36He sent us a message through the descendants of Israel—a good message that teaches that we can have peace through Yeshua the messiah—everyone’s master. 37And you all know the news that started in Galilee and spread through all Yudea after the time of Yohan’s teaching and ministry of immersion 38how God filled Yeshua from Nazareth with the holy spirit and with power, and who then went around doing good and healing all those oppressed by the devil, because God was with him. 39We are witnesses of all the things he did in the Jewish provinces and in Yerushalem, and then how he was executed by them on a stake. 40Then God brought him back to life on the third day and sent him where he could be seen, 41not by all the people, but to the witnesses that God had previously appointed—to us who ate with him and drank with him after he’d been raised from the dead. 42He commanded us to tell the people, and to testify that he is the one who God has designated to be the judge of the living and the dead. 43The writings of all the prophets point towards him, and everyone who believes that he’s God can have their sins forgiven by his authority.”

34And Petros having_opened_up the mouth said:
In truth I_am_grasping that the god is not a_favourer,
35but in every nation, the one revering him and working righteousness, is acceptable to_him.
36The message he_sent_out to_the sons of_Israaʸl/(Yisrāʼēl), good_message_preaching peace through Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa) chosen_one/messiah, this one is master of_all.
37You_all have_known the message having_become throughout all the Youdaia, having_begun from the Galilaia/(Gālīl), after the immersion that Yōannaʸs proclaimed, 38Yaʸsous which from Nazaret, how the god anointed him with_the_ holy _spirit and power, who passed_through doing_good and healing all the ones being_oppressed by the devil, because the god was with him.
39And we are witnesses of_all things that he_did both in the region of_the Youdaiōns and in in_Hierousalaʸm/(Yərūshālayim), whom also they_killed, having_hanged him on a_stake.
40This one the god raised on_the third day, and gave him to_become manifest, 41not to_all the people, but to_the_witnesses which having_been_previously_appointed by the god, to_us, who ate_with and drank_with with_him after the time him to_rise_up from the_dead.
42And he_commanded to_us to_proclaim to_the people, and to_testify that this one is the one having_been_designated by the god, as_judge of_the_living and the_dead.
43To_this one all the prophets are_testifying, everyone which believing in him to_receive forgiveness of_sins through the name of_him.

10:44 God’s spirit enters non-Jews

44While Peter was still speaking, the holy spirit came down onto everyone who was listening. 45The Jewish believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the holy spirit had been poured out even on non-Jews 46as they heard them speaking in other languages and magnifying God. Then Peter said, 47Surely no one could argue against them getting immersed in water now that they’ve received the holy spirit just like we did?” 48So with the authority of Yeshua the messiah, he commanded for them to be immersed in water. Then they asked him to stay with them for a few more days.

44The Petros still speaking the these messages, the the holy spirit fell_on on all the ones hearing the message.
45And the believers from the_circumcision, as_many_as came_together the with_Petros marvelled, that the gift of_the holy spirit has_been_poured_out even on the pagans.
46For/Because they_were_hearing of_them speaking with_tongues, and magnifying the god.
Then Petros answered,
47Surely_not anyone is_able to_forbid the water these which to_ not _be_immersed, who received the the holy spirit, as we_ also _did?
48and He_commanded them in the name of_Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa) chosen_one/messiah to_be_immersed.
Then they_asked him to_remain_on some days.
