Connecting Statement:

David continues speaking to the Israelites.

(Occurrence 0) He said to me

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said to=me Shəlomoh/(Solomon) son_of,your he/it build house_of,my and,courts_of,my that/for/because/then/when chosen in=him/it to=me as,son and,I be for=him/it as,father )

Alternate translation: “God said to me”

(Occurrence 0) my house

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said to=me Shəlomoh/(Solomon) son_of,your he/it build house_of,my and,courts_of,my that/for/because/then/when chosen in=him/it to=me as,son and,I be for=him/it as,father )

The word “house” refers to the temple of Yahweh.

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) I have chosen him to be my son, and I will be his father

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said to=me Shəlomoh/(Solomon) son_of,your he/it build house_of,my and,courts_of,my that/for/because/then/when chosen in=him/it to=me as,son and,I be for=him/it as,father )

This does not mean that Solomon becomes an actual son of God, but it describes the personal relationship that he and God will have. Alternate translation: “I have chosen to treat him like a son, and I will be like a father to him”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

28:2-10 The account of David’s first discourse includes a message addressed to his people (28:2-8) and a message to Solomon (28:9-10). The main focus of the address is David’s desire for Solomon to build a Temple. In addition, David addressed two other important themes: God’s selection of Solomon, and the people’s obligation to keep God’s commandments.
